As July comes to an end and August begins, guests have just over five months left to experience Tennessee’s popular theme park before it closes for its annual winter break. Dollywood is currently scheduled to welcome guests through January 3, 2027, before temporarily shutting its gates until the next operating season. That date has been confirmed as the end of the 2026 season.
That might sound like plenty of time, but the remainder of the season includes several of Dollywood’s biggest events of the year, making the coming months some of the busiest—and most exciting—to visit. Between a major new attraction, colorful fall celebrations, Halloween festivities, and one of America’s most celebrated Christmas events, there’s still plenty on the calendar before the park goes dark for the offseason.
A Major New Attraction Is Almost Here
Before the fall festivals arrive, Dollywood has one significant addition still waiting to debut.
NightFlight Expedition officially opens to all guests on August 19, 2026, introducing the park’s newest attraction after months of anticipation. Season passholders will receive an early opportunity to experience it during preview days scheduled for August 15 through August 18.
The new attraction gives returning visitors another reason to make a late-summer trip before Dollywood transitions into its fall celebration. Combined with the final weeks of Smoky Mountain Summer, August offers a chance to experience both a brand-new ride and many of the park’s current seasonal entertainment offerings before everything changes for autumn.
For many fans, NightFlight Expedition will become the biggest story of the month, but it’s only the beginning of what’s ahead during the remainder of the season. The attraction is expected to draw large crowds during its opening weeks, making late August one of the most anticipated periods remaining on Dollywood’s calendar.
Harvest Festival Takes Over This Fall
Once we get into September, Dollywood shifts into one of its most popular annual traditions.
The Harvest Festival returns beginning September 14 and continues through October 31, transforming the park with colorful fall decorations, seasonal food, live entertainment, and one of the country’s most recognizable autumn displays.
Great Pumpkin LumiNights once again serves as one of the festival’s signature experiences, filling the park with thousands of illuminated pumpkins after dark. During the day, guests can enjoy harvest-themed décor, specialty menu items, artisan demonstrations, and gospel performances throughout the park. The Smoky Mountains provide an especially scenic backdrop during this time of year as the surrounding hills begin changing colors.
For many visitors, fall has become the ideal time to experience Dollywood. Cooler temperatures often make it easier to spend an entire day exploring the park, while the seasonal decorations create an atmosphere that feels completely different from the summer months.
This year’s fall season also introduces something entirely new.
Harvey’s Boo Bash will make its debut on select nights in October as a separately ticketed after-hours event. The party begins after 9 p.m. and offers guests an additional Halloween-themed experience beyond regular park admission.
The combination of Harvest Festival, Great Pumpkin LumiNights, and Harvey’s Boo Bash means October will likely be one of the busiest periods remaining on Dollywood’s calendar.
Christmas Brings the Final Celebration of the Year
As soon as Halloween ends, Dollywood begins preparing for another fan favorite.
Smoky Mountain Christmas returns November 6 and continues through the park’s final operating day on January 3, 2027.
Widely considered one of America’s premier holiday theme park events, Smoky Mountain Christmas features millions of lights, seasonal entertainment, festive décor, holiday dining, and special celebrations centered around faith, family, joy, and tradition. Guests can also purchase a Tasting Pass to sample many of the event’s seasonal food offerings.
The holiday event has become one of the biggest reasons people travel to Pigeon Forge each winter. Families often build entire vacations around seeing the park illuminated for the season, enjoying Christmas shows, shopping for holiday gifts, and experiencing favorite attractions surrounded by festive decorations.
Because the event runs through early January, it also gives guests one final opportunity to experience Dollywood before the annual closure begins. That makes the days leading up to January 3 especially meaningful for passholders and regular visitors who know they’ll have to wait until spring for the park to reopen.
Why the Annual Closure Happens
While the headline may sound dramatic, Dollywood’s January closing date is part of the park’s normal operating calendar rather than a permanent closure.
Like many seasonal theme parks, Dollywood takes several weeks off each winter. The break allows crews to complete maintenance projects, inspect attractions, refresh landscaping, and prepare the park for another busy operating year. The offseason also gives the park time to work on improvements that are much more difficult to complete while thousands of guests are visiting every day.
