There exists a profound sense of nostalgia tied to Disney Channel that resonates deep within us, a nostalgia that transcends mere memories of films. It’s about vividly recalling the exact location where you first experienced the film, the cherished company of friends or family who shared that moment with you, and that magical feeling of empowerment that the music inspired—an anthem of possibility suggesting that with the right circle of friends, anything was achievable. For many who grew up in the early 2000s, The Cheetah Girls encapsulated this experience perfectly.
From the vibrant fashion statements each character presented to the unwavering camaraderie that connected them, along with the infectious, catchy songs that became anthems for a generation, the film radiated a singular energy that made four girls from New York not just friends, but a formidable force ready to take on the world, one performance at a time.
As the years rolled by, fans have experienced a longing for fresh content involving their beloved Cheetah Girls. The anticipation for something new felt almost palpable, and that wait seemed never-ending. However, this week, the wait has finally reached its conclusion.
In an exciting announcement, Disney Channel and Disney+ have officially confirmed the development of The Cheetah Girls: Next Gen. This new music-driven film promises not only to revive the essence of the original by bringing back beloved cast members but also to introduce a brand-new squad poised to carry the cherished legacy forward. Production is set to kick off in South Africa this month, and the buzz surrounding this project is genuinely electrifying for anyone who has ever found themselves quoting lines or singing songs from the original franchise in everyday conversations. The news reignites that special nostalgia and community spirit, setting the stage for a fresh chapter in a story that many hold dear.

The Originals Are Back
The headline news is exactly what fans have been hoping to hear. Raven-Symoné is returning as Galleria, and Adrienne Bailon is back as Chanel. Both stars are not just stepping in front of the camera either. Raven-Symoné is serving as an executive producer on the film alongside original franchise producer Debra Martin Chase, the same powerhouse behind The Princess Diaries. Bailon is joining as a co-producer, meaning these two have real creative investment in how this story is told.
The returning cast does not stop there. Lynn Whitfield and Lori Alter are both reprising their roles as Dorothea and Juanita, the iconic moms who brought so much warmth and comedy to the originals. Sabrina Bryan will make a special appearance as Dorinda, and Sophia Bush is joining the cast in a supporting role as a character named Jennifré.
Meet the Next Generation
The story picks up years after the original films, following Galleria and Chanel as they travel to Africa to volunteer at a wildlife sanctuary alongside Galleria’s daughter Faith and her three best friends. Along the way, the four teens will have their friendship tested, find their own voices, and discover what Cheetah Power means for a new era.
Faith is played by Leah Sava’ Jeffries, who audiences already know from Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Carmen Sanchez, known from Electric Bloom, steps in as Chanel’s sister Dior. Rounding out the new squad are Kaileen Chang as Ruby, Sophie Lennon as Brooklyn, and Kamogelo Ramashala as Kendi, a South African actor discovered through Disney’s global open casting call for the film.
The casting of a local South African talent through an open call is a meaningful touch, especially given that the story itself is set against the backdrop of a wildlife sanctuary on the continent. It grounds the film in something real rather than leaning entirely on Hollywood familiarity.

A Big Year for Disney Channel Fans
This greenlight is landing during what is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in recent memory for Disney Channel fans. 2026 marks milestone anniversaries for both High School Musical and Hannah Montana, and the summer is already stacked with major premieres, including Descendants: Wicked Wonderland and Camp Rock 3. Disney also recently announced the return of the Worlds Collide Tour this fall, bringing together talent from Descendants, ZOMBIES, and Camp Rock.
The Cheetah Girls: Next Gen drops right into the middle of all of that momentum, which feels intentional. Disney clearly understands that the audience who grew up on these franchises has grown up, and that there is an enormous appetite for content that honors what those stories meant while offering something new to the next generation of kids watching.
The film is directed and co-produced by Bille Woodruff, a name Bridgerton fans will recognize, written by Kara Holden, Sarah Watson, and Deborah Swisher, and features choreography by Kyle Hanagami.
