But despite grossing $1.338 billion worldwide and receiving positive reviews from audiences and critics, neither Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) nor Logan (Hugh Jackman) has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and no plans for their return have been outlined since that film.
Will Deadpool and Wolverine Return?
Jackman recently told Project Big Screen that he’d be willing to play Wolverine for as long as Marvel allows it. However, Reynolds has said a number of times over the past couple of years that he’s unsure whether he’ll reprise his role as the Merc with a Mouth, emphasizing that Deadpool works best when he’s part of a team, which for many ruled out the likelihood of a fourth film in the series.
Concerns that the character had been left on the sidelines first arose when, in 2025, the cast announcement for the upcoming ensemble film Avengers: Doomsday (2026) was shared during a livestream teaser, which showed a line of director’s chairs with several actors’ names on them. Reynolds was not included, and neither was Jackman.

Who’s In Avengers: Doomsday?
Among Doomsday‘s extensive lineup are several returning MCU actors, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), Simu Liu (Xu Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Letitia Wright (Shuri/Black Panther), and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier).
Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn reprise their roles as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Johnny Storm/Human Torch, respectively, from last year’s Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).
Leading the cast is Robert Downey Jr., who this time plays the iconic Marvel villain Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, a character who was teased at the end of Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Several X-Men Are Back, but Not Deadpool
Doomsday will also see actors from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men movies: Ian McKellen’s Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming’s Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn’s Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, James Marsden’s Scott Summers/Cyclops, Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier/Professor X (who also appeared in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and Kelsey Grammer’s Hank McCoy/Beast (who had a cameo at the end of 2023’s The Marvels).
Even Channing Tatum, who debuted in Deadpool & Wolverine, is back as Remy LeBeau/Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine. But, despite conflicting reports that Reynolds and Jackman will reprise their roles as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine, nothing has been confirmed.
Ryan Reynolds Opens Up About Deadpool’s Future
Fortunately, it seems that we may at least be getting a fourth Deadpool film.
Earlier this month, Reynolds strongly suggested during an appearance at Fanatics Fest 2026 that Deadpool 4 will happen at some point in the future.
“There’s a few really deep cuts that I think are missing behind the movies. I think there’s a few deep cuts missing from some of the comics. There’s certainly some stuff that, you know, I love that Fabian Nicieza [co-creator of Deadpool] wrote that is incredible. Gerry Duggan, who was a friend, was an incredible comic writer,” Reynolds said during a panel at the New York event (via Deadline), adding, “There’s stuff upcoming. There’s eventually, you know, remotely another Deadpool film. It’s going to be great.”
Though there had been some talk of a fourth film being in early development, with Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018) star T.J. Miller telling 101 WRIF Detroit earlier this year that Reynolds had a “really smart” idea for a sequel, until now, nothing concrete has been revealed.
The Merc With a Mouth Joins Doomsday Cast at SDCC
In another surprise twist, Reynolds made an official return as Deadpool in an unexpected place.
Several Avengers: Doomsday cast members took to the stage at this year’s SDCC on Saturday, alongside Doomsday directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo and Marvel President Kevin Feige, when none other than Ryan Reynolds himself surprised the crowd by showing up in a gray Deadpool suit (as seen in X-Force comics).
Naturally, he came armed with several jokes aimed at the Doomsday cast.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 18, 2026. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, which will conclude Phase Six of the MCU, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
