Universal Orlando Resort just fired off one of its most savage theme park jokes in recent memory, and Disney fans immediately noticed what was happening. The longtime rivalry between Central Florida’s two entertainment giants took another entertaining turn this month after Disney World celebrated the reopening of one of its most beloved attractions.

But while Disney fans were busy returning to the refreshed ride after more than a year of closure, Universal appeared to slide into the conversation with some very deliberate shade.

The timing felt way too perfect to be accidental.

Naturally, theme park fans across social media jumped all over it.

And honestly? Even some Disney fans had to laugh.

The Florida Theme Park Rivalry Is Bigger Than Ever

Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort have spent decades battling for attention in Florida. Ever since Universal first entered the Orlando market, the competition between the two companies has shaped the entire theme park industry.

That rivalry feels especially intense right now.

Universal also has the fresh Epic Universe park, which is easily one of the most talked-about theme park expansions in years. Between SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, Stardust Racers, and several major new attractions, Universal has completely changed the conversation around Orlando vacations.

At the same time, Disney World is hardly sitting still.

Magic Kingdom continues preparing for massive expansion projects. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is about to debut Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets later this month. EPCOT continues to evolve with refreshed entertainment and returning experiences. Disney has also spent significant money modernizing several classic attractions instead of simply replacing them outright.

One of those projects finally reopened earlier this month after a lengthy closure.

And almost immediately, Universal decided to have some fun with it.

Universal’s Facebook Post Was Not Subtle

On Universal Orlando Resort’s official Facebook page, the company shared photos of the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride inside Seuss Landing at Islands of Adventure.

The caption read:

“This here’s the wildest ride in Seuss Landing!”

Fans instantly understood the joke.

Disney fans know Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is famously called “the wildest ride in the wilderness.” Universal’s use of nearly identical wording on the same day Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened after its 16-month refurbishment felt very intentional.

And the timing matters here.

Disney officially reopened Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on May 3, 2026. Universal’s social media post appeared that very same day, making it almost impossible to ignore the connection.

Of course, Universal never mentioned Disney directly. The company never outright named Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. But theme park fans immediately connected the dots online.

It was classic Universal social media behavior.

The company has built a reputation over the years for poking fun at Disney whenever the opportunity presents itself. Sometimes the jokes are subtle. Sometimes they are absolutely not subtle at all.

This definitely fell into the second category.

Fans Absolutely Loved the Shade

The internet reaction came fast.

Comment sections quickly filled with people laughing about the obvious dig toward Disney. Some fans could not believe Universal actually posted it publicly, while others praised the social media team for leaning fully into the rivalry.

A few reactions stood out especially quickly online.

“Wait… Universal said WHAT now?”

“Disney living rent-free 24/7 in Universal’s brain.”

“I see what you did there.”

Other comments turned into debates about what Universal’s true “wildest” ride actually is.

The joke clearly landed exactly the way Universal probably hoped it would.

And honestly, moments like this are part of what makes the Disney vs. Universal rivalry so entertaining for theme park fans. Both companies know their audiences watch everything closely. Even small social media captions can suddenly become huge discussion topics across the community.

This one definitely got people talking.

Universal Was Clearly Making a Bigger Statement

Now, let’s be fair for a second.

The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride, obviously, is not competing with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as a thrill ride. They are completely different attractions built for very different audiences. But that wasn’t really the point.

Universal was clearly making a larger statement about the differences between the two resorts’ coaster lineups. And from a pure thrill perspective, Universal probably feels pretty confident right now.

Stardust Racers immediately became one of Orlando’s most talked-about coasters after Epic Universe opened. VelociCoaster is probably the best roller coaster I have ever ridden. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure continues pulling massive wait times years after opening because guests love the launches, storytelling, speed, and unique ride system.

Universal has leaned heavily into intense thrill attractions over the past several years.

Disney usually approaches coasters differently. The company focuses more on accessibility, family experiences, and heavy storytelling rather than pure intensity. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad perfectly represents that philosophy.

And yes, compared to Universal’s top thrill rides, Big Thunder absolutely falls into the family coaster category.

Please don’t hate me for saying that, because I genuinely love Big Thunder Mountain Railroad! It’s definitely one of Disney’s most iconic attractions. I’m looking forward to my next trip to Magic Kingdom so I can ride it again!

BUT Universal was obviously flexing a little here.

The company was basically reminding everyone that Disney’s coaster lineup cannot really compete with what Universal currently offers thrill seekers.

What Exactly Changed for Big Thunder Mountain?

Even with Universal joking around online, Disney fans returning to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad have noticed some major improvements since the attraction reopened.

The biggest upgrade happened beneath the ride itself.

Disney completely replaced the coaster’s track for a noticeably smoother ride experience while maintaining the attraction’s speed and classic feel. Some guests even believe the ride feels slightly faster now than it did before the closure.

Disney also introduced entirely new ride trains, updated seating, and redesigned lap bar restraints. Those updates improved rider comfort while also helping Disney lower the attraction’s height requirement slightly.

Inside the attraction, several scenes received dramatic visual upgrades as well. The opening cave sequence now feels far more alive thanks to richer lighting effects, deeper colors, improved sound design, glowing gold details, and a ton of animated bats with blinking eyes hidden throughout the scene.

The town of Tumbleweed also received extensive restoration work. Buildings look cleaner and fresher, props were repainted, and even tiny environmental details throughout the town now stand out much more clearly than before.

Then there is the finale. Disney added a massive new “mother lode” gold vein effect near the ending scenes while also reworking portions of the final lift hill storyline. The attraction now feels more cinematic and visually detailed during its final moments.

In many ways, Disney treated the refurbishment less like basic maintenance and more like a full modernization of a Magic Kingdom classic.

The Rivalry Is Great for Theme Park Fans

At the end of the day, Universal’s post was clearly meant to be playful trolling more than anything truly serious. Still, it perfectly captures where the Orlando theme park rivalry stands in 2026.

Both companies constantly watch each other.

Every new attraction opening matters. Every refurbishment matters. Every social media post gets dissected online within minutes.

And honestly, that competition benefits guests more than anyone else.

Universal keeps pushing Disney to modernize older attractions and invest in bigger experiences. Disney keeps pushing Universal to improve storytelling and immersion. Both companies are spending billions trying to outdo one another.

So yes, Universal absolutely mocked Disney.

But after finally getting to ride the newly upgraded Big Thunder Mountain Railroad again, plenty of Disney fans probably laughed at the joke and headed right back into the queue anyway.
