This weekend, Gina Carano will return to TV in a major career moment–but will her settlement with Disney and conversations with Lucasfilm’s newly installed co-President lead her back to the New Republic?

The fallout surrounding The Mandalorian and the firing of Gina Carano remains one of the most debated controversies in modern Lucasfilm history. More than five years after Carano was removed from the hit Disney+ series, discussion surrounding her exit, her lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company, and the future of her character Cara Dune continues to generate attention across the entertainment industry.

Carano first appeared in The Mandalorian as Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune opposite Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin. The series quickly became the flagship live-action Star Wars project for Disney+, with breakout popularity fueled by Grogu, widely known by fans as “Baby Yoda.” Across its first two seasons, the series expanded its ensemble with major Star Wars names, including Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka Tano), Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand), and Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett), while the Season 2 finale famously featured the return of Luke Skywalker, portrayed by Mark Hamill.

However, Carano’s growing political activity and controversial social media posts created mounting backlash online. In February 2021, Lucasfilm announced the actress was no longer employed by the company, describing her online posts as “abhorrent and unacceptable.” The decision immediately divided fans, with hashtags supporting and criticizing the actress trending simultaneously across social media. Debate surrounding the firing also spilled over toward Mandalorian creatives, including Jon Favreau and Pedro Pascal.

Following her departure from Star Wars, Carano continued working in entertainment with projects including Running Wild With Bear Grylls, Terror on the Prairie (2022), and My Son Hunter (2022). Meanwhile, fellow Mandalorian actor Emily Swallow briefly addressed Carano during a 2021 convention appearance, describing her former co-star positively while clarifying she had no knowledge of the internal circumstances surrounding Lucasfilm’s decision.

The controversy also reignited broader conversations surrounding “cancel culture,” freedom of speech, and the role corporations play in policing personal opinions expressed online. Carano herself has repeatedly framed the situation as part of a larger cultural debate over whether entertainers and public figures should face professional consequences for their political views.

At the same time, Carano’s exit dramatically altered the future of her Star Wars character. Cara Dune had reportedly been positioned for a larger role in Lucasfilm’s expanding Mando-Verse, including the now-canceled Rangers of the New Republic spinoff.

In 2024, Carano escalated the dispute by filing a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm, alleging wrongful termination and discrimination. The lawsuit, which received financial backing from Elon Musk, argued that the actress had been treated differently from male co-stars who had publicly shared political opinions online.

The legal battle eventually concluded with a settlement between both parties, though the specific terms were not disclosed publicly. Lucasfilm later issued a statement praising Carano’s professionalism, fueling speculation that the door may not be completely closed on a future Star Wars return.

Carano has since revealed that she reconnected with both Favreau and Lucasfilm Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni after the settlement was finalized. During a recent interview ahead of a highly publicized MMA event involving Ronda Rousey, the actress said discussions about the future of Cara Dune may already be underway.

“I’ve already had a conversation with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. We got onto a Zoom call. It was really nice. Dave is taking over as CEO of Star Wars. We didn’t miss a beat. Jon Favreau got on Zoom and was really funny. He was like ‘So, where did we leave off?’”

The actress also reflected on the lawsuit itself, explaining that she viewed the dispute as a matter of principle despite the potential damage it caused to her career. Carano argued that Americans should not fear losing professional opportunities over personal beliefs or political opinions, while criticizing what she believes is growing corporate influence over individual expression.

At a press conference on May 14 (via Fox News), Carano spoke about her decision to speak out and challenge one of the biggest corporations in the world.

“I don’t think we should take their livelihood from them,” Carano told the press ahead of her MMA fight against Rousey, which will be shown live from Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, on Netflix this weekend. “We should be able, in America, to set the precedent of freedom. And I’m not sorry one bit, and it turned out well. Disney settled, and I’m proud of that. That was a huge victory for me.”

With a Disney settlement and the apparent end of the Mando-Verse with The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) and the upcoming second season of Ahsoka, could Lucasfilm opt to reinstate Cara Dune and bring back the Rangers of the New Republic TV show? Only time will tell.

Whether Cara Dune ultimately returns to Star Wars remains unclear, but the discussion surrounding Carano’s firing continues to cast a long shadow over Lucasfilm’s streaming era. As the franchise moves forward with projects like The Mandalorian and Grogu, the controversy remains closely tied to the evolution of Disney’s most successful Star Wars television property.

Gina Carano’s big return to MMA in MVP MMA: Rousey vs. Carano will air on Netflix on May 16, live from Inglewood, California.
