Are you ready for this Cars relaunch for a new Disney audience?

Disney’s Cars franchise has been a mainstay of Pixar storytelling for nearly two decades, evolving from a heartfelt animated film into a global brand spanning sequels, merchandise, and theme park experiences. Since the release of Cars in 2006, audiences have followed the journey of Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), a hotshot rookie race car who learns the value of friendship and humility in the quiet desert town of Radiator Springs.
The film’s success led to two sequels—Cars 2 (2011) and Cars 3 (2017)—as well as a wave of spin-offs, shorts, and one of Disney’s most commercially successful merchandise lines. Lightning McQueen himself quickly became one of Pixar’s most recognizable characters, resonating with younger audiences while maintaining a nostalgic pull for longtime fans. Even today, the franchise remains a fixture in Disney Parks and retail spaces, proving its enduring popularity.

When Cars raced into theaters in 2006, it proved to be another major win for Pixar, both critically and commercially. The film grossed over $460 million worldwide, solidifying its place as one of the year’s biggest animated hits, while also earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Beyond the box office, however, its real impact came from its cultural footprint (literally; Lightning McQueen Crocs, anyone?). Lightning McQueen quickly became a household name, especially among younger audiences, and the film’s themes of friendship, humility, and small-town charm resonated strongly with viewers. Perhaps most significantly, Cars launched one of Disney’s most lucrative merchandise empires, generating billions in retail sales and cementing the franchise as a long-term pillar of the company’s animation and theme park strategy.

Now, Disney is preparing to take the world of Cars in a bold new direction.
Start your engines, because Pixar’s beloved franchise is shifting gears once again—this time with a brand-new animated series and a massive theme park expansion. However, longtime fans may notice that Lightning McQueen and his friends are looking a little different.
Set to debut in 2027, Cars: Lightning Racers marks the next evolution of the franchise. Developed as a Disney Jr. series and slated to stream on Disney+, the show brings back fan-favorite voices, including Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen and Larry the Cable Guy as Mater.

But while the voices remain familiar, the visual style is undergoing a significant transformation.
Unlike Pixar’s signature hyper-realistic animation—known for its detailed textures and cinematic lighting—the new series embraces a more stylized aesthetic. Early previews showcased bold outlines, simplified forms, and highly expressive character designs. The look feels closer to the franchise’s merchandise and theme park artwork, offering a playful tone that aligns with its younger target audience.
Now, an official first look has been given. As shared on Disney Jr.’s Instagram, the beloved Cars characters can be seen in all their glory.

This shift signals a deliberate effort by Disney and Pixar to keep Cars accessible and relevant to a new generation, even if it means stepping away from the visual identity that defined the original films.
It’s also important to note that Lightning Racers is not Cars 4. While speculation about another theatrical sequel has circulated for years, this series serves as a television continuation of the existing universe rather than a direct follow-up on the big screen. Still, its development underscores just how valuable the Cars brand remains nearly 20 years after its debut.

From Screen to Park: Cars Takes Over Magic Kingdom
While Lightning McQueen gears up for his small-screen return, Walt Disney World Resort is simultaneously undergoing one of its most significant transformations in years—centered entirely around the Cars universe.
At Magic Kingdom, Frontierland is being reimagined into Piston Peak National Park, an immersive new land inspired by America’s iconic wilderness destinations. The project represents a major shift for the park, replacing longtime attractions such as the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat.

For many guests, these closures marked the end of a nostalgic chapter. However, Disney Imagineers are aiming to usher in a bold new era with an expansive environment featuring rugged mountains, dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and even geothermal elements—all reinterpreted through the lens of Cars.

The new land is expected to feature at least two major attractions. One will reportedly be a high-speed off-road rally adventure, placing guests directly into the action alongside both new and familiar characters. The second attraction is said to offer a more family-friendly experience, blending storytelling with accessible thrills.

Concept art suggests an ambitious scale, with towering peaks and sweeping vistas designed to rival some of Magic Kingdom’s most immersive lands. Rather than replicating Radiator Springs from Disney California Adventure, Piston Peak is being positioned as a fresh addition to the Cars universe—one that blends Frontierland’s Americana roots with the adventurous spirit of the films.
A Franchise That Isn’t Slowing Down
Taken together, the upcoming Disney Jr. series and the Magic Kingdom expansion highlight a coordinated effort to keep Cars firmly in the spotlight. What began as a simple story about a racecar learning life lessons in a forgotten town has grown into a multimedia powerhouse.

From streaming content to theme park lands, Cars continues to evolve while maintaining the core elements that made it so popular in the first place. And with Lightning McQueen still front and center, it’s clear that Disney has no plans of letting this franchise fade into the background.
For fans, the road ahead is packed with new experiences—whether that means tuning in from home or stepping into the wild landscapes of Piston Peak National Park. One thing is certain: Lightning McQueen’s journey is far from over.
