Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is currently installing a new boundary wall and levee along the Sassagoula River, with construction noticeable as of March 19. Guests should not be concerned, as this project is for the river, not a border. However, it could disrupt transportation within Disney properties, an ongoing issue.

Disney’s extensive transportation systems, often taken for granted, are crucial for getting guests between hotels and parks. Disruptions can unexpectedly affect their plans, impacting the entire day’s experience.

Materials for the new boundary wall have been spotted near the riverbank, with some areas still untouched, suggesting further changes ahead. Yellow floating turbidity barriers are also in place to protect the river ecosystem by minimizing sediment transport and preventing debris from entering the waterway during construction.

Stakes are in place behind the existing metal barriers, with the top portion of the barriers having been removed from some of them, causing them to bow out or in, as visible in photos from the construction site, creating visual evidence of the ongoing work that is reshaping the riverbank infrastructure along the Sassagoula River. As of now there have been no announcements about an interruption to the Sassagoula River Cruise service from Saratoga Springs or any of the other locations along the river including Disney’s Port Orleans Resorts which consist of Riverside and French Quarter, Old Key West Resort, and Disney Springs, though the construction work raises questions about whether boat service might need to be suspended at some point during the project as heavy equipment and wall installation could interfere with safe navigation of the waterway.

The Sassagoula River Cruise has been one of the more pleasant transportation options at Walt Disney World providing scenic boat rides that connect multiple resorts to Disney Springs while allowing guests to avoid bus transportation and experience relaxing journey through landscaped waterways, making any potential disruption to this service notable for guests who prefer boat transportation over buses or who have mobility concerns that make boats more accessible than other options.

The Broader Transportation Crisis at Disney World

At Walt Disney World the resort’s internal transportation network connects dozens of hotels to four theme parks, Disney Springs, and each other through a combination of buses, monorails, Disney Skyliner gondolas, and boat service, with all of those systems seeing significant changes right now meaning that if you have a trip coming up the details are worth knowing before you leave home. Guests staying at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge will want to note that the resort’s boat dock is going into a maintenance closure starting April 13, 2026, and running through May 1, 2026, with boat transportation to Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort being suspended for the full duration of that window.

This is not the first time the dock has gone offline for maintenance; the boat service was previously suspended from January 12 through January 30, and the upcoming closure follows the same pattern of routine upkeep. The dock maintenance itself is expected to continue through late July 2026, but Disney has indicated that boat transportation should resume as of May 2, with all of that being subject to change of course as construction timelines frequently shift based on weather, material availability, and unforeseen complications.

During the closure, guests will still be able to reach Magic Kingdom via Disney bus service, though it is not the same experience, as the boat ride across Bay Lake is genuinely one of the nicer moments of a Wilderness Lodge stay, and swapping it for a bus is a real downgrade in atmosphere even though guests will still get where they need to go. One thing worth flagging specifically is that there is no direct bus route from Wilderness Lodge to Disney’s Contemporary Resort, meaning that if guests need to get there during the boat closure the recommended path is to take the bus to Magic Kingdom and then board the monorail to the Contemporary adding time and a transfer that should be planned for accordingly if there is any resort-hopping on the itinerary for those dates.

The Disneyland Transportation Shutdown

The closure of the Wilderness Lodge is temporary, but changes at Disneyland Resort will affect guests at offsite hotels. The Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) system, which has helped many visitors reach Disneyland, will stop running on March 31, 2026, due to financial losses.

A new shuttle service will debut in the last week of March, operating between the Disneyland Resort transit hub and ten hotels in Garden Grove, including Sheraton Garden Grove, Hyatt Regency, and Great Wolf Lodge. Managed by the Parking Company of America, this shuttle will charge a small fee per guest, with details yet to be announced, creating budget uncertainties for travelers.

How This Affects Disney World Vacations

Transportation disruptions can significantly impact a Disney trip, particularly when commutes to the park take longer than expected. This can interfere with the valuable early morning hours when crowd levels and wait times are lower. Unplanned transfers add stress to managing dining reservations, Lightning Lane selections, and coordinating schedules for various group interests.

For Wilderness Lodge guests traveling from April 13 to May 1, it’s essential to allow extra time for mornings that would usually start with a boat ride. Those at the ten Garden Grove hotels on Disneyland’s new shuttle list should check updated fees and schedules against rideshare pricing for the best options. Meanwhile, offsite Anaheim hotel guests not included in the shuttle list will face greater challenges due to the ART shutdown, needing to consider parking, rideshare, or switching hotels. Overall, the combination of disruptions at both Disney resorts can complicate guest transportation and vacation plans.

The River Wall and Transportation Future of Disney World

Disney is building a wall at Walt Disney World for the Sassagoula River creating new boundary infrastructure that protects riverbanks from erosion and maintains water quality, though the construction raises questions about potential future interruptions to boat transportation that connects Saratoga Springs, Port Orleans Resorts, Old Key West, and Disney Springs through the scenic waterway.
