Disney has announced the 2026 honorees for the Disney Legends award. This list includes mostly celebrities, along with a few Disney artists and Imagineers, and Bob Iger. Many are surprised that Michael Eisner has not been awarded the honor, especially since Bob Iger will be recognized later this year. Eisner is known for saving Disney from financial troubles and for leading major projects such as the Disney animation Renaissance, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Disneyland Paris.
The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. PT at the Honda Center. This event is part of the D23 weekend, and it will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest. Thousands of Disney fans will come together to celebrate the honorees.
The 2026 honorees include a mix of celebrities, creative talent, and company leaders: Chris Berman from ESPN, Jerry Bruckheimer from film, Susan Egan from voice work, Eric Goldberg from animation, Anne Hathaway from film, Bob Iger as former CEO, Kim Irvine from Imagineering (the daughter of Imagineers Leota Toombs and Harvey Toombs), Dwayne Johnson from film, the Jonas Brothers from TV and music, Lin-Manuel Miranda from film and music, and Alan Tudyk from film and voice work. This list reflects multiple decades and various roles within Disney’s creative community.

The Eisner Legacy That Disney Seems to Forget
Eisner is credited with saving the company from financial collapse in 1984 when he became CEO at a time when Disney was facing hostile takeover attempts and had lost its creative direction following Walt Disney’s death, with the Disney animation Renaissance representing period from the late 1980s through the 1990s when films like The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King revitalized Disney’s animation legacy and restored the company’s cultural prominence. Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which opened in 1989, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, which opened in 1998, represent major theme park expansions that occurred under Eisner’s leadership, while Euro Disney, now known as Disneyland Paris, represented Disney’s first European theme park resort opening in 1992, creating international expansion that broadened Disney’s global footprint.

These achievements represent foundational work that created the modern Disney company with its diversified entertainment portfolio and expanded theme park presence, making the continued exclusion from Disney Legends status particularly notable given that without Eisner’s leadership in the 1980s and 1990s Disney might not exist in its current form.
The Iger Record That Gets Immediate Disney Recognition
Iger has led the company for years, but his legacy is more about buying up a lot of IP and companies, including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Fox Assets, representing an acquisition strategy rather than internal creative development. Except for sequels, Pixar is struggling at the box office with recent original films underperforming compared to the studio’s earlier successes, while Marvel and Star Wars are in a slump or decline, with audience fatigue setting in after years of oversaturation across theatrical releases and streaming series.
Willow and Indiana Jones hit the wall with the Willow streaming series being cancelled after one season and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny underperforming at the box office in 2023, while the Fox acquisition is still considered a good move but was far too much money with Disney paying $71 billion for assets that included significant debt and content that did not always align with Disney’s family-friendly brand positioning.

Bob Iger also awarded himself the 50-Year Disney employee award, even though 22 of those years were at ABC before Disney bought the company and he came with it, so technically, he was not a 50-year Disney employee, creating a situation where Iger’s tenure calculation includes years working for a completely different company before Disney’s 1995 acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC.
The Social Media Reaction
Travis Cooper from MouseVault posted, “Bob Iger being a Disney Legend before Michael Eisner is all you need to know about the state of Disney right now,” capturing widespread sentiment that the Disney Legends selection process reflects current company politics rather than an objective assessment of contributions to Disney’s success.
Enrico Matassa posted, “How about Michael Eisner? Who reinvigorated the company and made all that money that Iger used to just buy IPs and studios,” highlighting that Iger’s acquisition strategy was funded by the profitable company Eisner built.
Jomodi Marsta posted, “There are few people in this world who deserve a Disney Legend award more than Michael Eisner. Yes, he left on bad terms, and he made a lot of decisions that many folks don’t agree with, but he saved the company and the brand. No one would be getting DL Awards without him,” acknowledging that while Eisner’s departure was contentious, his fundamental contributions to Disney’s survival and growth remain undeniable.
