Universal Orlando Resort spent years building anticipation for Epic Universe. The brand-new theme park promised groundbreaking attractions, cutting-edge ride technology, and immersive worlds unlike anything guests had experienced before. For many theme park fans, Epic Universe represented the future of Universal’s Orlando lineup.
Yet even after operating for more than 300 days, the park continues to face notable challenges. Guests continue to celebrate the scale and ambition of the park, but conversations across fan communities increasingly revolve around operational hiccups that don’t seem to be disappearing.
The excitement surrounding Epic Universe hasn’t faded. But as the park approaches its first anniversary, some visitors say the experience isn’t running as smoothly as they expected.

The New Worlds of Epic Universe
Epic Universe is Universal Orlando Resort’s newest theme park and one of the largest theme park expansions in the company’s history. The park opened in May 2025 and quickly became one of the most talked-about destinations in the theme park world.
At the center of the park sits Celestial Park, a lush hub filled with gardens, restaurants, and the park’s signature attraction, Stardust Racers. From this central area, guests branch out into several themed lands built around major entertainment franchises.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic takes visitors into a new era of the Harry Potter story, bringing them inside the British Ministry itself through a massive dark ride. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD transports guests directly into the colorful universe of Mario and friends, complete with rides based on Mario Kart and Donkey Kong.
Dark Universe offers a gothic world inspired by Universal’s classic monsters, featuring attractions tied to Frankenstein and the studio’s legendary horror characters. Meanwhile, the How to Train Your Dragon land invites families into Berk, where dragon-themed rides and Viking adventures dominate the landscape.
Each of these lands offers immersive environments and ambitious ride systems designed to push the boundaries of modern theme park technology.
But with complex attractions often comes operational complexity.

Early Opening Struggles
When Epic Universe first opened, excitement was matched by growing pains. Guests visiting during the early weeks reported a wide range of operational issues that sometimes disrupted their park day.
Brand-new rides are notoriously difficult to keep running flawlessly during their first months. Attractions rely on intricate technology, advanced animatronics, and complex ride systems that require time for teams to fine-tune fully. Many theme park enthusiasts expected some level of downtime while Universal worked through those early challenges.
Visitors frequently reported ride delays, temporary breakdowns, and fluctuating wait times across multiple attractions. In many cases, rides would close briefly before reopening later in the day.
At the time, many fans gave Universal the benefit of the doubt. A new park of Epic Universe’s scale would naturally need time to settle into a stable rhythm.
But as the months passed, some guests began to notice a pattern.

Problems That Haven’t Disappeared
Nearly a year after opening, some visitors say Epic Universe still struggles with ride reliability.
One guest who visited the park in March 2026 shared their experience online after encountering multiple ride closures throughout the day. In a Reddit post, the visitor described a frustrating start to their visit.
“This is my fourth time [at Epic Universe], and I have never seen it this bad operationally. We knew Stardust was closed, but Ministry, Mario Kart, and Monsters were all broken down to start the day, and the latter two have yet to open. The Ministry just opened to a 180-minute wait. DK, Hiccups, and Werewolf have also gone down for extended periods. Because the ride options are so limited, Yoshi has a 95-minute wait. I was able to get on DK with early entry at an hour wait (thankfully before it went down), but haven’t gotten on anything else yet.”
The guest even went so far as to say they considered asking for a refund, something they admitted they had never thought about during years of visiting theme parks.
“I have never done this in all my years of going to theme parks, but I might seriously ask for a refund. At least it’s a nice day out.”
While this represents one visitor’s experience, it reflects a growing sentiment among some fans that Epic Universe still faces reliability challenges.

Why Universal Needs to Solve These Issues
Ride downtime isn’t unusual at major theme parks. Every park deals with mechanical hiccups and temporary closures from time to time.
However, consistency matters when a park contains a relatively small ride lineup.
Epic Universe relies heavily on its major headliner attractions to keep crowds spread across the park. When several of those rides experience downtime at the same time, wait times for the remaining attractions can skyrocket.
Guests who planned their day around certain rides may suddenly find those experiences unavailable for hours.
For Universal, solving these issues is critical not only for guest satisfaction but also for the park’s long-term reputation. Epic Universe represents billions of dollars in investment and stands as the company’s most ambitious theme park project ever built.
Guests expect that level of investment to translate into a reliable experience.

When Ride Closures Derail an Entire Day
Operational issues can quickly transform what should be a magical park day into a frustrating one.
Unlike larger theme parks with dozens of attractions, Epic Universe currently has a more focused lineup of rides. That design works well when everything operates smoothly. But when multiple rides close at the same time, options become limited.
Suddenly, guests may find themselves with little to do besides walking around the park, shopping, or waiting in extremely long lines for the few rides still running.
Weather delays can make things even worse. Florida storms already force outdoor rides to close periodically. When mechanical issues stack on top of weather closures, the number of available attractions shrinks even further.
For families who saved up for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, those moments can feel particularly disappointing.
The park’s stunning environments and themed lands still offer plenty to explore, but rides remain the backbone of any theme park experience.

A Park With Enormous Potential
Despite these challenges, Epic Universe still holds enormous promise.
The park’s themed lands are widely praised for their detail and creativity. Universal has built environments that truly immerse guests in the worlds of Mario, Harry Potter, classic monsters, and dragons.
If Universal continues refining its operations and improving ride reliability, Epic Universe could easily become one of the most beloved theme parks in the world.
But as the park approaches its first anniversary, guests will be watching closely.
After more than 300 days of operation, many visitors hope the park’s technical growing pains will finally begin to fade. Until then, conversations about ride reliability will likely remain part of the Epic Universe story.
