Marvel’s Wolverine is being given a major overhaul.

Hugh Jackman has played Logan/Wolverine in the X-Men films for a long time. First appearing in X-Men (2000), the Australian actor’s adamantium-clawed mutant returned in X-2 (2003), X-Men 3: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), all the while starring in his own trilogy of solo films, X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), The Wolverine (2013), and Logan (2017).

Most recently, he appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth in the blockbuster sequel Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which serves as a conclusion to the Deadpool series, Fox’s era of X-Men films, and Wolverine’s introduction into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Doomsday Brings Back Several X-Men Actors

However, while audiences are expecting to see the X-Men officially merge with the MCU following this year’s epic crossover movie, Avengers: Doomsday (2026), it remains to be seen whether Jackman will reprise the role in any future films in the long-running franchise.

Directed by the Russo brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame), Doomsday features a huge ensemble cast with several returning MCU characters and the actors who have shaped them in previous films, including Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), with Tony Stark/Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom.

Hugh Jackman’s Logan/Wolverine Hasn’t Been Confirmed

It also features several actors from the X-Men films reprising their roles, such as Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, and James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops. Channing Tatum also reprises his role as Remy LeBeau/Gambit, having first played him in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

While the film is likely keeping some cameos secret in the same way Deadpool & Wolverine kept certain character appearances close to its chest, for now, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine remains absent from the lineup. The uncertainty surrounding the actor’s return in any theatrical project going forward has also fueled fan-castings that have included Man of Steel (2013) star Henry Cavill, who appears as a Multiversal variant of Logan in last year’s film.

Meanwhile, conflicting reports that Ryan Reynolds will return as Wade Wilson continue. It also remains to be seen whether we’ll get another Deadpool & Wolverine, although according to Reynolds’ comments in 2024, that seems very unlikely.

Wolverine Will Return… But Not in Avengers: Doomsday

However, away from the big screen, the iconic X-Men character is set to make a triumphant return — but Hugh Jackman won’t be donning the yellow spandex and the wild hairstyle.

Last year, the first official trailer for the long-gestating title Marvel’s Wolverine premiered online, following years of silence since its announcement teaser. The footage teases a brutal third-person action-adventure starring the mutant anti-hero, who’s voiced by another Australian actor — not Hugh Jackman, but Liam McIntyre of Gears of War fame.

Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Marvel’s Wolverine tells an original, self-contained story that shares continuity with the developer’s previous Spider-Man series.

“As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes, unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination, to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be,” the official synopsis on Marvel.com reads.

Now, the release date for Marvel’s Wolverine has finally been revealed. In a post shared across social media, Insomniac wrote “Let’s cut to the chase: Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15, 2026″ and shared a six-second teaser of the game. Watch it below:

Wolverine is also set to return in the second season of the animated revival series X-Men ’97, which premieres on Disney+ later this year, with Cal Dodd expected to reprise his role.

Meanwhile, Wade Wilson/Deadpool was also recently recast in Meta Quest’s Deadpool VR, in which How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris takes on the role.

Whether or not Jackman will appear in Avengers: Doomsday remains to be seen. The film’s extensive cast also includes Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright as Shuri/Black Panther, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man, Wyatt Russel as John Walker/U.S. Agent, and Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic.

Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18.
