Space Mountain is set to close at one Disney park, effective later this month.

Since 1975, Space Mountain has served as a cornerstone of Disney park attractions, debuting at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World as a pioneering indoor roller coaster. Combining darkness, starfield effects, and space-age theming, it redefined thrill rides within family-oriented theme parks.

The attraction expanded globally with versions at Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, each featuring distinct track layouts, soundtracks, and narratives. Some iterations emphasized intensity, others smoother motion, reflecting regional preferences and evolving ride technology.

Over time, Space Mountain has undergone its fair share of changes. Disneyland Paris has embraced its Star Wars overlay, Hyperspace Mountain, full-time (although some fans are still rooting for it to restore its OG identity, De la Terre à la Lune, amid rumors of an upcoming two-year refurbishment). At Tokyo Disneyland, the original attraction has been demolished as the park continues to build a brand-new, more technologically advanced version of the ride in Tomorrowland.

Disney Park Confirms “Operational Adjustments” for Space Mountain

At Hong Kong Disneyland, Space Mountain is set to close to undergo its own set of changes.

The attraction – which is technically currently Hyperspace Mountain – will shut down for “operational adjustments” from February 24 to late April 2026.

While the park hasn’t detailed the extent of these “adjustments,” Hong Kong Disneyland regulars have previously theorized that it will eventually ditch its Star Wars overlay for the attraction.

Rumors heated up in 2025 when the park scrapped the X-Wing that previously sat outside Hyperspace Mountain’s entrance.

Right now, Hong Kong Disneyland describes the attraction as follows:

“The adventure begins as Admiral Ackbar briefs you on your mission: the Rebel Alliance needs your help flying a reconnaissance vessel to survey an Imperial Star Destroyer spotted near Jakku—a desert planet featured in the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. An elite X-wing squadron escorts you into hyperspace. You arrive at your destination to find the Star Destroyer waiting for you, surrounded by a swarm of TIE fighters. It’s a trap!”

Hyperspace Mountain has previously made appearances at Disneyland Resort as part of Season of the Force and Star Wars Nite. However, the park has not adopted the overlay full time – a fact that’s well received by plenty of fans, who have negatively compared the two experiences.

Ongoing Changes at Hong Kong Disneyland

Hong Kong Disneyland is deep into its 20th-anniversary celebrations, with new anniversary entertainment, parades, and seasonal offerings running through summer 2026 as part of “The Most Magical Party of All.”

Expansion plans remain underway in Tomorrowland, where the Stark Expo area is set to receive a new Tower of Terror-esque Spider-Man attraction. The park also intends to debut an exclusive Pixar Entertainment Experience near Toy Story Land and World of Frozen.

New entertainment offerings are also on the horizon. A walk-around Olaf audio-animatronic is on its way to World of Frozen in March, building on immersive character encounters.
