The trailer is officially out for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Star Wars fans are shocked, to say the least.
Over six years on from the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), May marks the silver screen’s return to a galaxy far, far away. The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026) is set to follow three seasons of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, a (relatively) Jedi-free adventure set in the early days of the New Republic.

Just like the show, Pedro Pascal leads as Din Djarin, a Mandalorian warrior commonly known as Mando, whose creed mandates that he never remove his helmet. Grogu returns as his trusty – and adorable – companion, with Sigourney Weaver joining the cast as Ward, a colonel and leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers, and Jeremy Allen White portraying Rotta the Hutt, son of the iconic crime lord Jabba the Hutt.
‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Trailer Drops Shocking Truths
Until now, we’ve known relatively little about the events of The Mandalorian & Grogu.
In a new trailer released by Lucasfilm, we learn that Mando is seeking information about a Hutt. To gather the info he needs, he visits an Ardennian, voiced by none other than iconic director Martin Scorsese.

Most notably, the trailer reveals that we will actually see Pedro Pascal’s face in the movie. Mando will be unmasked – seemingly, multiple times or for an extensive period of time – in the movie.
This is a new role for Pascal in the franchise. Until now, his physical appearances have been few and far between. In Season 1, Episode 8, his helmet is removed so a droid can see to his injuries. The following season saw his helmet removed twice – once in Episode 7, so Mando can scan his face in an Imperial terminal to save Grogu, and again in Episode 8 to bid an emotional farewell to Grogu, who leaves to undergo Jedi training with Luke Skywalker.
While Pascal was apparently in the suit from time to time during Season 1, he soon passed over the physical role of Mando to stunt doubles such as Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder. “Frankly, my body wasn’t up for the task,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2023. Instead, Pascal primarily provided voiceovers.

Why Has ‘Star Wars’ Unmasked The Mandalorian?
While it’s still unclear how much of the film will feature Pedro Pascal’s actual likeness, it’s not totally surprising that Star Wars is unmasking Mando.
Pascal’s star power has grown exponentially since he was first cast in The Mandalorian. The actor is now a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having portrayed Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
He’s set to reprise the role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
He’s also led The Last of Us, the zombie series based on the video game of the same name, and starred in the likes of Materialists (2025) and Gladiator II (2024).

For Disney to limit the benefits of said star power by keeping Pascal suited and booted always seemed unlikely. What is more surprising is the decision to reveal that we’ll once again see Mando unmasked before the film’s release.
Much has been made of the lukewarm reception to The Mandalorian & Grogu to date. A teaser aired during the Super Bowl divided fans so much that both Lucasfilm and Disney released statements explaining their intentions.
Reports also suggest that Lucasfilm plans to use the film’s performance as a litmus test for future MandoVerse projects, including a previously announced team-up film led by the studio’s new co-president, Dave Filoni.
Dropping a Mando face reveal a whole three months before the film’s release may just be proof that Lucasfilm is keen to turn the tide on The Mandalorian & Grogu. If social media reactions are anything to go by, it’s made the right move. Fans have generally reacted positively to the revelation that Mando will be unmasked in the film.

“The arc of Din Djarin’s conflict with his helmet and showing his face we should’ve had in season 3 is finally here,” wrote one X, formerly Twitter, user.
Another wrote, “NO YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW SERIOUS THE SITUATION IS. DIN DJARIN UNMASKED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 6 YEARS. AND IT’S FIGHT SCENES. IT’S DONE THE EXACT WAY I’VE ALWAYS ASKED FOR. THIS WAS DONE FOR ME PERSONALLY.”
One user said, “The Decision to unmask Din Djarin again was so unexpected but is so appreciated like I never knew this day was coming again.”
Some have shared passionate responses – not necessarily because they’re excited to see Pascal on-screen, but because they know the emotional implications of Din Djarin removing his helmet.
“Everyone excited for helmetless din djarin because it’s pedro, i’m over here sick to my STOMACH because unless his opinions on the creed have changed, he’s going to be feeling immeasurable guilt and his own clan will shun him again until he visits the waters,” wrote one X user.

Fans will need to wait until May 22 to see the full context of how and why Mando is unmasked. However, it seems like excitement is finally building among Star Wars fans for that day to come.
