When Mighty Morphin Power Rangers premiered in 1993, it became an overnight success. Alongside dominating children’s TV, the series sparked a merchandising craze — toys, costumes, and lunchboxes flew off shelves, making the series a pop-culture phenomenon.
That success solidified the franchise’s place in 1990s pop-culture history, influencing children’s television, retail, and fandom for several years to come.

Power Rangers Is Coming to Disney+
Now, after changing hands several times, and with decades of live-action seasons behind it, the brand is being reimagined again under Hasbro, the current rights holder.
Following reports earlier this year that Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were developing a Power Rangers reboot, it has now been confirmed that they are involved with a new series, which is in the works for Disney+.

During a premiere event for Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, which is due to premiere its first two episodes on December 10, Movieweb asked Shotz about the rumors. “You are asking questions that you know I can’t answer,” he laughed, adding, “Let’s just say we very much hope to bring that story to life, so that’s all I can say at this point.”
However, Steinberg was less vague, confirming the news by saying, “The rumor is true. I can not tell you, but I am very, very excited for that story.” What remains to be seen is if the new series will be a clean start or something tied into the franchise’s overarching universe.

Previous Power Rangers Reboot Failed
The project isn’t the franchise’s first attempt at a reboot. The most recent big-screen iteration — the 2017 film directed by Dean Israelite and starring Naomi Scott — failed to ignite the hoped-for resurgence. That film grossed $142.5 million worldwide on a $100—105 million budget, and despite its ambition and widely positive reviews, it never got a sequel.
This latest initiative — powered by Disney+, Hasbro and two experienced showrunners — represents the franchise’s most significant streaming-era pivot. What remains to be seen is whether the new take will modernize the Power Rangers mythos for a new generation or aim to recapture nostalgia by tapping into the original ’90s series.
Either way, the legacy of those mighty morphin’ teens and color-coded, spandex-wearing is set to evolve once more.
