If you’ve been anywhere near EPCOT this holiday season, you already know the park feels a little different right now.

Between the Festival of the Holidays crowds, the evening entertainment, and the limited-time overlays, EPCOT has turned into a hotspot for families trying to squeeze in every bit of seasonal magic they can. And surprisingly, one of the biggest stars of the season hasn’t been a thrill ride or a headliner—it’s been Living with the Land.

Thanks to its glowing Glimmering Greenhouses overlay, the classic boat ride has suddenly become one of the most talked-about experiences in the park. Guests have packed into the queue each night just to see the attraction lit up with festive displays, which is why it stunned so many people when its wait time soared to 85 minutes on Sunday. That’s practically unheard of for this usually slow-and-steady tour through Disney’s agricultural innovations.

But with a surge in popularity comes a little more strain on the ride, and that’s when things took a turn. EPCOT guests arrived on Monday, December 8, expecting another night of holiday charm—only to discover something they were absolutely not prepared for.

The Sudden Shift No One Saw Coming

That’s when a message popped up in the My Disney Experience app, catching guests off guard. It wasn’t just a quick note about temporary downtime. It was a full, formal statement from EPCOT leadership addressing the situation directly:

“On behalf of the entire team at EPCOT, I’d like to apologize that Living with the Land is currently unavailable. Our Cast Members are working diligently to get the attraction up and running again, and we are sorry you are not able to experience this attraction at this time. I hope you will enjoy some of our other attractions during your experience in the park today.”

Seeing that message—especially one signed by a Vice President—instantly raised eyebrows. It’s not something that appears every time a ride goes down, and it signaled that this wasn’t just a routine pause.

A Ride Already in a Tough Spot

The shutdown comes at a rough moment for Living with the Land. Over the past several weeks, the attraction has seen more downtime than usual, and guests have noticed. A couple of recent viral videos even showed boats partially sinking, with riders stuck as water pooled around their feet. While no one was harmed, those clips spread fast and sparked plenty of conversations about the ride’s maintenance.

So the sudden closure—right in the middle of its busiest and most celebrated seasonal run—didn’t just inconvenience guests. It added another layer to a growing list of issues that fans have been watching closely.

Where Things Go From Here

The silver lining is that the attraction’s systems are generally simpler than many of EPCOT’s newer rides, meaning it typically bounces back quicker when hiccups happen. Disney’s message makes it clear that Cast Members are working hard to get things moving again, and with Glimmering Greenhouses drawing such huge interest, you can bet they’re prioritizing it.

But with holiday crowds only getting thicker, wait times climbing, and recent mechanical hiccups still fresh in guests’ minds, Living with the Land may continue to see some pressure as the season goes on.

At this time, Living with the Land has reopened, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see it undergo more downtime as the holiday season progresses.
