We finally have some information about the plot of Frozen 3, and fans are not impressed, to say the least.

To say that Frozen is one of Disney’s most bankable franchises would be an understatement. The 2013 animated feature became a cultural juggernaut, earning over $1.28 billion at the global box office and winning Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Its anthem “Let It Go” turned into a worldwide phenomenon, fueling merchandise sales and cementing Frozen as one of the highest-grossing animated films in history.

Frozen 2 followed in 2019 and proved the franchise was far from a one-hit wonder. The sequel outperformed the original financially, grossing more than $1.45 billion worldwide. It received generally positive responses for its deeper themes and stunning animation, while its soundtrack – anchored by “Into the Unknown” and “Show Yourself” – continued Disney’s tradition of turning songs into global hits.

In the years since, we’ve seen Frozen areas open at both Hong Kong Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea. A third area, World of Frozen, is set to open at Walt Disney Studios Park (soon to become Disney Adventure World) in spring 2026.

Now, we’re prepping for Frozen 3. Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company (for now, at least) confirmed the threequel in February 2023, and while its release was originally set for 2026, it’s since been pushed back to November 2027.

Obviously, Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel are returning as Anna and Elsa, respectively. You can also expect to hear Josh Gad back as the voice of everyone’s favorite (or least favorite, depending on who you ask) animated snowman, Olaf.

We now also know what to expect from the film’s plot.

Plot Synopsis Revealed for ‘Frozen 3’

At Disney’s Consumer Products Division Launch Conference in Shanghai, Frozen 3 had some licensing products on display, containing a synopsis for the film.

“In this new chapter, witness the wedding of the century in Arendelle as Queen Anna walks down the aisle and joins Elsa on a new magical journey filled with unknown challenges,” the synopsis reads. “And what’s even more exciting: the royal family is about to welcome a mysterious new member!”

Of course, this has left fans theorizing about the finer points of the film’s plot, with some suggesting that this new addition to the family could be everything from Anna and Kristoff’s baby to one of the sisters’ supposedly dead parents.

Others have also theorized that the film could take inspiration from the Frozen plot in the confused but wonderful Once Upon a Time, which featured a character known as Ingrid (portrayed by Elizabeth Mitchell), who was Anna and Elsa’s aunt.

Even more outlandish theories suggest that the film will canonize the popular fan conspiracy that Anna and Elsa’s parents are actually Tarzan’s parents. (Unlikely, yes, but it’s nice to dream.)

However, some have also shared their disappointment with the synopsis.

“Ah yes, the lazy trope of ‘adding a descendant because our creativity’s been milked,'” one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Love that. Wanna bet the kid will have fire powers?”

Another said, “That sounds terrible no one asked for this…”

“This literally sounds like the plot of a Disney direct-to-DVD sequel,” one wrote.

At this point, we’d argue that it’s too early to judge. If there’s one thing to take from the Disney+ documentary Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2, it’s that a lot can change during the filmmaking process at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

With Frozen 4 also apparently in the pipeline, there may also be more to this storyline than we think.
