The Walt Disney Company is going all-in on The Simpsons after acquiring the decades-old television series during the 2019 merger with 20th Century Fox. On September 29, Deadline reported that the animated family will return to the big screen in 2027, taking over a slot previously held for an untitled Marvel Studios film.

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie Simpson first hit the silver screen in 2007 with The Simpsons Movie. The animated film smashed the box office, earning $183 million domestically and over $536 million worldwide. In 2018, 20th Century Fox announced plans to make a sequel, but the studio went quiet after Disney acquired the company.

The Simpsons will return to movie theaters around the globe exactly two decades after the release of the first film. On September 29, Disney announced that a new Simpsons movie will premiere in theaters on July 23, 2027:

Woohoo! The Simpsons are coming to theaters with an all-new movie on July 23, 2027!

Disney hasn’t shared any information about the plot or title of the film, although the “2” sprinkles on Homer’s donut suggest that it could simply be called The Simpsons Movie 2. It’s likely (though not confirmed) that the movie will star the voice cast of the television series, including Dan Castellaneta as Homer, Yeardley Smith as Lisa, Julie Kavner as Marge, and Nancy Cartwright as Bart, as well as Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer in multiple roles. It’s unclear whether David Silverman, who directed The Simpsons Movie (2007) and many of the show’s original episodes, is involved in the 2027 project.

According to DeadlineThe Simpsons movie is taking over a release date previously held for an untitled Marvel Studios film. Luckily, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans will still have one film to look forward to that year: Avengers: Secret Wars is set to premiere on December 17, 2027.

Marvel Studios is no stranger to shuffling release dates. Most recently, Avengers: Doomsday was pushed back from its original May 2026 release date to December 18, 2026. Similarly, Avengers: Secret Wars was initially set to premiere in May 2027, before being moved to December. The next MCU film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, releases in theaters on July 31, 2026.

Do you think The Simpsons has changed since The Walt Disney Company acquired 20th Century Fox?
