In 2021, when the world was still recovering from the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic, Disney released a new animated film that would become wildly popular among adults and children alike. That movie is Encanto, and it tells the story of the Madrigal family. The Madrigals live in the hills of Colombia, and everyone born into the family is given a magical gift.

Well, everyone except Mirabel. Mirabel is the black sheep, but she tries her hardest to encourage everyone else and gain the acceptance of her grandmother, who always seems to be disappointed in her.

One day, Mirabel sees cracks appearing in her family’s magical casita. She is worried that the magic is fading, but her grandmother tells her that she is making things worse and nothing is wrong.

Together with her Uncle Bruno — who has been ostracized from the family for years (but secretly living in the house) — Mirabel must figure out why the casita’s magic is fading and how she can save the only home she knows and the family she loves.

In the end, Mirabel learns that she is just as much a part of her family as everyone else, and just as important. And her abuela (grandmother) learns that just because Mirabel can’t speak to animals or make flowers grow, she has her own abilities that make her magical.

HOME SWEET HOME -- The Madrigal’s casita in “Encanto” is more than a house—it’s alive—embodying the same magic that has blessed the Madrigal children for two generations. Filmmakers liken the house to a loyal pet—it is part of the family. The love for one another is mutual. In addition to loving the story that Encanto told, fans absolutely loved the movie’s music, written by Hamilton creator and Disney darling, Lin Manuel Miranda. In fact, the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” shot to the top of the charts — surpassing songs like “Let It Go” from Frozen (2013) — and is considered the most successful Disney song ever created.

Since Encanto hit theaters four years ago, fans have been wondering if and when a sequel film will be released.

And while we don’t know when a sequel film will come out, we have learned that Disney has not abandoned the idea of a sequel!

PEOPLE recently spoke with Encanto star John Leguizamo, who voiced Bruno, and asked him about a sequel film. And he said that he wanted to make another film just as much as audiences want to see one.

“I’m also waiting for an Encanto 2 when all we do is talk about Bruno,” Leguizamo said, alluding to one of the movie’s fan-favorite songs “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

“I’m calling them every day saying ‘When is No. 2 coming?’ They’re trying to come up with the storyline. They’re working on it,” Leguizamo added.

At this time, Disney has not confirmed an Encanto sequel and has not said that there are plans for a sequel in the future. However, recent moves by the company show that they are still invested in the Madrigal family.

Earlier this year, DinoLand, U.S.A. officially closed at Walt Disney World Resort and will be transformed into an area called Tropical Americas. The new land will feature an area dedicated to the Indiana Jones franchise, and another area that will bring Encanto to life for the first time!

Between the new Encanto area coming to Disney World and the popularity of the original film, it is not surprising that Disney is constantly discussing the story a sequel film could tell.
