Guests visiting EPCOT’s The Seas With Nemo & Friends Pavilion were met with an unexpected sight today as the resident manatees, Lil Joe and Inigo, were notably absent. Ropes and curtains blocked access to the manatee viewing areas on both the ground floor and the second-floor observation deck, sparking curiosity among visitors.

Where Did the Manatees Go?

According to sources at the attraction, Lil Joe and Inigo have been relocated to two separate marine facilities: the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park and the Mote Marine Laboratory. However, staff could not confirm which manatee was sent to which location.

Lil Joe, a long-time resident of EPCOT, has been a beloved fixture for years, providing guests with an up-close look at manatee conservation efforts. Inigo, a more recent addition, joined the park in September following the relocation of another manatee, Lou.

Lou’s departure was part of a larger statewide initiative led by the Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services to manage manatee populations and ensure their well-being.

As news began to spread, guests shared notable distress over the loss of Lil Joe. One guest shared on X;

“Yep didn’t want to see this. I totally get moving them to a long term facility and that’s better. But selfishly I’m going to miss seeing Lil Joe at The Seas”

The Bigger Picture

The relocation of Lil Joe and Inigo is part of a broader effort to support manatee health and conservation across Florida. These moves are strategically coordinated by marine experts to address environmental and population needs. The partnership between Disney and various marine conservation organizations reflects a commitment to the protection and rehabilitation of these gentle giants.

Additionally, the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park received three dolphins from EPCOT last year as part of these adjustments. This reflects a broader initiative of theme parks moving away from animal entertainment.

A Temporary Change?

For now, guests will notice the absence of manatees at The Seas With Nemo & Friends Pavilion, but the move underscores Disney’s dedication to marine life conservation. The Seas Pavilion has long served as a hub for education and advocacy, showcasing the importance of protecting vulnerable species like manatees.

Visitors curious about the pavilion’s future plans or the return of manatees are encouraged to stay tuned to updates from Disney and its conservation partners. While their absence may disappoint some, the relocation ensures that Lil Joe and Inigo receive the best care possible as part of larger efforts to safeguard the manatee population.
