A New Era for Universal’s Entrance Signs

In October, Universal Orlando announced plans to replace its five entrance signs with larger, modernized versions featuring digital LED screens. Now, construction has begun, and the old signs, staples of Universal Orlando’s branding for years, are being dismantled.

The new designs aim to celebrate Universal’s iconic franchises while embracing the future of theme park signage. Each new sign will include the Universal Orlando Resort logo prominently displayed against a striking blue background, flanked by high-resolution digital screens showcasing animated sequences, images, and Universal IPs.

Iconic Characters Take Center Stage

It was confirmed that each sign will highlight Universal’s beloved franchises:

  1. Jurassic World Dinosaurs: Blue the velociraptor and a triceratops will appear on the first sign, bringing prehistoric action to life.
  2. Shrek Characters: Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots are featured in a whimsical sky reminiscent of the DreamWorks logo.
  3. Hogwarts Castle: A fog-shrouded Hogwarts Castle from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will dominate another sign, capturing the magic of the franchise.
  4. DreamWorks Animation Duo: Trolls’ Poppy and Viva are paired with Po from Kung Fu Panda on a family-friendly sign celebrating DreamWorks Animation’s diversity.

Replacement Locations and Construction Progress

The five new signs will replace the existing ones at these key locations:

  • Turkey Lake Road and Hollywood Way
  • Universal Boulevard and Hollywood Way
  • South Kirkman Road and Major Boulevard
  • Vineland Road and Universal Boulevard

WDWNT confirmed that at several locations, including Universal Boulevard and Hollywood Way, the old signs have already been removed. Black scrims featuring the Universal Orlando Resort skyline now conceal the construction areas, with decorative shrubbery and flowers left untouched in front of the scrims to maintain aesthetic appeal.

Though the old signs have been dismantled, visible progress on the installation of the new signs is limited so far. No structural components for the digital displays are evident yet, and Universal has not announced an official completion timeline.

A Modern Vision for Universal

The move to digital signage represents a broader evolution for Universal Orlando Resort. The addition of LED displays will allow the signs to adapt their visuals dynamically, displaying animations, videos, and promotional content tailored to park events and special occasions. This technological leap ensures that Universal remains at the forefront of innovation in the theme park industry.

The redesign also signals Universal’s intent to keep its branding in line with the high expectations of its ever-growing fan base. As Universal continues to expand, with projects like Epic Universe on the horizon, these upgrades solidify its role as a leader in the theme park world.

Fan Reactions

The news has been met with excitement from fans eager to see Universal’s creativity on display. With franchises like Harry Potter, Shrek, and Jurassic World taking center stage, the updated signage is expected to draw attention from locals and visitors alike, turning Universal’s entryways into attractions in their own right.

While Universal has not shared a completion date, the updates are sure to make a splash once unveiled. For now, the scrim-covered construction sites serve as a promise of what’s to come—a fresh, dynamic gateway to the thrilling adventures Universal Orlando Resort offers every day.
