Recent rumors have surfaced regarding a significant shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) strategy – and we admit that we’re pretty surprised by this new direction.

As per industry insider My Time To Shine Hello, Marvel Studios is currently working on a new project beyond its traditional film and Disney+ TV content. This new story would take the shape of a video game, allowing players to explore a superhero-laden world that weaves narratives that intertwine with existing MCU storylines.

With MCU projects often meticulously plotted to connect with one another, the introduction of interactive media might lead to unforeseen changes in narratives. Audiences are unsurprisingly curious about how this change will affect beloved characters and stories that fans have come to cherish, especially considering how previous gaming efforts have been more MCU-adjacent.

Back in 2019 when Kevin Feige was promoted to Chief Creative Officer at Marvel Studios, fans were promised his creative vision would extend across all mediums—gaming and publishing included.

Not long after, it was confirmed that Marvel had teamed up with Electronic Arts to develop three brand-new video games, starting with EA Motive’s much-anticipated Iron Man game (which won’t star Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, still isn’t out, and won’t be any time soon).

Each of these games will unfold in its own unique universe, sparking plenty of speculation that this new, mysterious project could break fresh ground. But for now, that’s all it is—speculation. If a new game is indeed in development, it’s likely still in the very early stages, meaning fans have a long wait ahead before it hits shelves.

This is an extremely transformative time for Marvel. While Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) was a massive success, with the combined effort of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman raking in over $1 billion at the box office, the past few years have been checkered with flops for the superhero movie studio.

Critics have accused the cinematic universe of growing too complicated and bloated for its own good – especially with the introduction of Disney+ shows, which have made keeping up with the storyline more like homework than entertainment for some.

Whether adding video games into the mix will improve or add to that complexity remains to be seen. For now, however, we’re cautiously optimistic about what the future of MCU gaming could hold.
