After nearly three decades, Disney Pixar has finally found the replacement for the beloved Toy Story franchise.

For nearly 30 years, the Toy Story franchise has been a cornerstone of Pixar and Disney’s animated legacy. Since the debut of Toy Story (1995), audiences have been enamored by Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang as they navigated a world of toys coming to life.

The film not only pioneered the world of computer-animated films, but it also captured the hearts of millions, spawning a franchise that has remained beloved through generations. The franchise’s staying power has been nothing short of extraordinary, and with Toy Story 5 in the works, it’s clear that Pixar is far from done with the iconic characters that have defined their studio for nearly three decades.

Toy Story has consistently set the benchmark for animated storytelling. The franchise’s success is rooted in its ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary themes, ensuring each film resonates not just with the children of today but also with the adults who grew up with the original.

Pixar’s meticulous animation, heartfelt character arcs, and the ever-evolving storylines of the toys have kept audiences coming back for more. Each film has been a commercial triumph, with Toy Story 4 (2019) surpassing $1 billion at the global box office and Toy Story 3 (2010) winning an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

However, despite its unparalleled success, there’s a new contender in Pixar’s lineup that might just steal the spotlight from Woody and Buzz. Enter Inside Out 2.

The original Inside Out (2015) was a landmark film in its own right, diving into the intricacies of human emotions in a way that no animated film had before.

The story of Riley and her emotions – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust – touched audiences worldwide, becoming one of Pixar’s most thought-provoking and emotionally resonant films. Its success was undeniable, grossing $858 million globally and securing an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

So, when Pixar announced a sequel, expectations were high. Yet, few could have anticipated just how much of a juggernaut Inside Out 2 would become.

Summer 2024 has proven to be a golden season for animated blockbusters, with Inside Out 2 leading the charge. Since its release, the film has been breaking box office records left and right.

After the holiday weekend, Inside Out 2 has climbed into the Top 10 highest-grossing movies of all time, amassing an incredible $1.667 billion worldwide. This remarkable feat has not only made it the first animated movie ever to hit $1 billion in overseas box office, but it has also pushed it past The Lion King (2019) on the all-time list.

Only a few films have ever surpassed the $1 billion mark internationally, placing Inside Out 2 in an elite category and solidifying its place in cinematic history.

The achievement is particularly impressive when considering that Inside Out 2 now sits just shy of Jurassic World (2015), which grossed $1.671 billion, with expectations high that it will soon surpass that number. The top 10 list of highest-grossing films includes some of the biggest blockbusters ever made, with Avatar (2009) reigning supreme at $2.923 billion.

With Inside Out 2’s continued box office success, it’s not unreasonable to think that it could edge closer to some of the top-tier earners.

Historically, Toy Story has been Pixar’s “flag-bearer,” the franchise that defined the company’s brand and commercial identity. Yet, with Inside Out 2 breaking box office records and capturing the hearts of millions, the baton of Pixar’s leading franchise may very well be passed on.

Pixar and Disney have recognized the massive success of Inside Out 2 and are already working on expanding the universe. A Disney+ series titled Dream Productions is in development, set to feature many of the beloved cast members from the first two films.

This series will dive deeper into the world of Riley’s mind and the emotions that govern it, allowing fans to explore new storylines and interactions within this imaginative universe.

With the overwhelming success of Inside Out 2, it wouldn’t be surprising if Disney quickly moves to greenlight an Inside Out 3. The potential for this series to evolve into a multi-film franchise is now more apparent than ever.

While Pixar had always relied on Toy Story as their flagship franchise, it seems that Inside Out is quickly rising to the top, poised to take over that prestigious role. This shift may signal the beginning of a new era for Pixar, one where the emotional complexities of Inside Out define the studio’s future in the same way Toy Story did for the past three decades.

The staying power of Toy Story is undeniable, and there is no doubt that Toy Story 5 will be another massive success. However, the rise of Inside Out 2 brings an interesting narrative to the forefront: for the first time, another Pixar franchise is not only challenging Toy Story but could be surpassing it in cultural relevance and box office dominance.

As audiences around the world continue to flock to theaters to see Inside Out 2, the film’s impact is reshaping the landscape of animated films, possibly ushering in a new flagship for Pixar.
