Disney’s output of live-action films inspired by its collection of classic animated films has increased significantly over the last several years, with releases like The Lion King in 2019 bringing in billions at the box office.
Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid in 2023 proved to be a pop culture powerhouse as well, though this success did not carry over to all films. Disney’s Haunted Mansion (2023) failed to excite both audiences and critics, floundering at the box office.
This was far from the first time Disney attempted to cash in on one of its theme park attractions. In 2021, Disney released Jungle Cruise, a film based on its iconic theme park ride in California and Florida.

According to multiple sources, Disney is now reportedly working on a sequel to Jungle Cruise (2021).
While exciting, Disney’s original Jungle Cruise failed to resonate with audiences and critics. It generated a little over $220 million on a reported budget of $200 million. The film received mixed reviews, though many praised its leads, Emily Blunt and Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson.

The original film saw Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt become jungle skippers in a breathtaking adventure inspired by the classic theme park attraction of the same name. The movie followed Skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson), Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt), and McGregor Houghton (Jack Whitehall) as they all searched for an ancient tree that holds an incredible healing power.
While the film stalled at the box office and failed to stir up critics, a sequel to Jungle Cruise seemed inevitable.
In an interview with Collider, film Producer Beau Flynn revealed that there have already been discussions about not only bringing the duo of Johnson and Blunt back for a sequel but potentially even turning it into the next big Disney movie franchise, similar to Pirates of the Caribbean.
“On Jungle Cruise 2, obviously, it’s something we really want, I think more important than what Hiram and I want, I think is Dwayne and Emily have created such an incredible bond. Their chemistry is extraordinary in the first movie and I know now they know these characters so intimately. I know that they have big ideas of where they can take that universe and world.”

Jungle Cruise is far from where The Rock and Disney’s relationship ends. The world-renowned celebrity is set to star in Moana 2 later this year.
Moana 2 will continue where the original left off, with Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho set to reprise their respective roles of Maui and Moana.
Disney is also developing a live-action version of Moana, which does not yet have an official release date.
