After over 21 years of anticipation, Freaky Friday (2003) is finally getting a sequel. Originally teased with an Instagram post from Jamie Lee Curtis featuring her fictional daughter Lindsay Lohan, it was confirmed that the movie would start filming this summer. While Curtis and Lohan are still in talks to reprise their roles, Nisha Ganatra has already been confirmed to direct.

The original film was a critical and financial success, earning $160.8 million on a $26 million budget and a Golden Globe nomination for Curtis for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Lohan and Curtis starred as Anna Coleman and Tess Coleman alongside Harold Gould as Alan Coleman, Mark Harmon as Ryan, Chad Michael Murray as Jake, and Ryan Malgarini as Harry.

While the film with Lohan and Curtis is probably the most well-known nowadays, it isn’t the first or most recent Freaky Friday project from Disney. The original movie was released in 1978 and starred Jodie Foster in the daughter role and Barabara Harris as the mother.

Another version was released in 1995 as a television film on ABC starring Shelley Long and Gaby Hoffman as the body-swapping duo. Finally, there was a 2016 stage musical of Freaky Friday that toured the country, starring Heidi Blickenstaff as the mother and Emma Hunton as the daughter. It was adapted into a Disney Channel Original Movie in 2018, with Blickenstaff reprising her role and Cozi Zuehlsdorff as the daughter.
