Season 2 of Netflix’s spooky fun hit, Wednesday, is finally able to begin filming after a lengthy delay due to the now-resolved WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While we can expect to see much of the same Wednesday Addams antics from Season 1, the show’s star, Jenna Ortega, recently warned fans that they’re in for a much darker, occult storyline in Season 2.

Ever since director Tim Burton’s Wednesday series landed on Netflix in 2022, Jenna Ortega has found herself skyrocketing to Hollywood superstardom thanks to her portrayal of troubled teen Wednesday Addams.

The show is, of course, a spinoff of The Addams Family (1991), with Ortega taking over the title role from Christina Ricci and Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones playing her parents Gomez and Morticia Addams, respectively.

Wednesday Season 1 consisted of eight episodes clocking in at roughly 60 minutes each, and from the sounds of it, Season 2 will follow suit. Impressively enough, the series made history with the most hours watched in a week for an English-language TV series ever on Netflix, meaning fans’ expectations are undoubtedly high.

And torturous, it sounds like Wednesday Season 2 will be.

Speaking with Deadline, Ortega recently offered an update on Wednesday Season 2’s progress, where this time around, she’ll double as its star and co-executive producer. During the interview, the actress shared some new insights into the upcoming episodes, including the fact that she’s “received some scripts now” and that it will “feel a little bit more like a movie:”

I’ve received some scripts now for the second season, and we’re definitely leaning into a little bit more horror. It’s really, really exciting because all throughout the show [Wednesday] never really changes and that’s what’s wonderful about her. There’s some really good one-liners and I think everything is bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. I think each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.

Although Wednesday certainly dipped its toes into the macabre, Ortega’s comments imply that Season 2 will go all-in on the type of family-friendly horror that made Tim Burton such a household name. She even went as far to compare Season 2 to classic slasher flicks like Carrie (1976) and Prom Night (2008), suggesting that the new Wednesday episodes will be more cinematic in nature:

In the first season, we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of Season 2] that I’ve read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for, because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky.

Ortega also revealed to Vanity Fair that Wednesday showrunners are “expanding on the supernatural world” in its sophomore season, saying, “Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expanded on that a little bit.”

While she neglected to specify further, it’s safe to say that Season 2 will feature a whole lot more of things that go “bump” in the night. Still, it’s unlikely that Wednesday will lose its TV-14 rating anytime soon, so fans shouldn’t expect to see anything too explicit or gory when the new episodes roll out.

As of now, no release window has been set for the second season of Wednesday. But with cameras set to begin rolling soon, fans can start getting excited to return to Nevermore Academy.
