There are countless rides to experience at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, with attractions ranging from iconic dark rides to thrilling roller coasters. From Magic Kingdom and EPCOT to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

However, to find the best selection of thrill rides, guests must head over to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is one of Walt Disney Imagineering’s greatest works. It’s incredibly immersive and tells one of the spookiest yet most enthralling stories guests will find at any theme park attraction. The ride itself looks stunning and truly transports guests into the golden era of Hollywood. Most of all, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is an incredibly fun ride, dropping guests multiple times faster than the actual speed of gravity. One of the coolest aspects of this attraction is that it’s completely random, meaning guests don’t know when or how often they will be dropped, all of which adds to the fun. The original Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is truly one of the best attractions at any Disney theme park, blending immersive storytelling with a ride experience that is sure to make you scream.

This is why Disney saw it as a perfect choice for a film adaptation.

Following the release of Disney’s Haunted Mansion (2023) film, which was based on the legendary Disney dark ride, plans are reportedly under way to develop a film based on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. While this may sound like a bizarre decision by Disney, this is actually not the first time that a movie has been made inspired by this spooky attraction.

In 1997, Disney released Tower of Terror, which starred soon-to-be-acclaimed actress Kirsten Dunst. The film was not released in theaters but rather on ABC. Now, over two decades later, Disney is reportedly working on another adaption of the ride, this time one that involved Scarlett Johansson.

According to Comicbook.coma film based on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror was in the works prior to the Hollywood strikes. Since these strikes have ended, the film has continued development of the movie being none other than Marvel superstar Scarlett Johansson.

The Avengers star joined the adaptation as a producer in 2021, with Toy Story 4  director Josh Cooley set to write the script. Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi was attached to direct at the time. Johansson confirmed that the film remains in development during her appearance on TODAY.

“Now that the writers’ strike is all over with, we’re finally able to dive back into polishing up this script. It’s a massive, huge undertaking,” Johansson said. Johansson has gone on record countless times talking about how big a fan of Disney and the theme parks she is, so this match is seemingly made in heaven.

Johansson and Disney is certainly an interesting team-up, considering the legal battles the two have faced. In 2021, Johansson sued The Walt Disney Company for $50 million due to a dispute about her standalone MCU film Black Widow (2021). The lawsuit reads:

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”

With this history, it’s quite interesting to see Johansson still eager to adapt such a legendary Disney theme park ride into a feature-length movie, and we could not be more excited to see the finished product.

Of course, there is no set release date for the film, so make sure you stay tuned here at Inside the Magic for all future updates!
