The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, is a series of fantasy swashbuckler films directed by Gore Verbinski and others. The inaugural film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), introduces Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), who teams up with blacksmith Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) to rescue Elizabeth from cursed pirates led by Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).

Subsequent films include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), where Jack Sparrow owes a debt to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy); Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007), following the characters’ efforts against the East India Trading Company and Davy Jones; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), with Jack Sparrow searching for the Fountain of Youth; and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), where Jack faces Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) seeking revenge.

Key characters include the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow, skilled blacksmith Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann, who evolves from a governor’s daughter to a pirate ally. Other notable characters include the cunning and formidable pirate Captain Hector Barbossa, the cursed Captain Davy Jones with a tentacled face, and the ghost pirate hunter Captain Salazar.

The franchise, known for its swashbuckling action, supernatural elements, and humor, has been a commercial success, propelled by Johnny Depp’s acclaimed portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. The films have captured the imaginations of audiences worldwide with their adventurous tales of pirates, cursed treasures, and memorable characters.

The films have grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide, with a lot of that success contributing to the cult-following Johnny Depp created. Depp has been the titular character in the films, as the one person who we can rely on to continue his journey. This is why fans all over the world were shocked to learn that Disney gave him the boot, and made him walk the plank.

Disney removed Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow during his public trial with ex-wife Amber Heard. Heard accused Depp of abusing her, and Depp stated that her words were in fact, lies. Disney, instead of being loyal to Depp through the trial, left him high and dry and without a job. In the end, Dep was proven to be not guilty, so it may be Disney who now feels they are walking the plank, especially considering Pirates has brought in more money than any other “live-action” film they have made, and with the financial turmoil that the entertainment side of Disney is facing, losing that franchise.

Depp had previously stated that not even $300 million could entice him to return to Disney, a sentiment he maintained during his trial.

Following this, there were talks that Depp would be replaced by Margot Robbie. Those talks have since come to an end.

Now, it seems that the next instalment of Godzilla is borrowing from the Pirates of the Caribbean trope.

CBR reported,Godzilla’s trip back to the Age of Sail is a high energy, high seas adventure that borrowed the best bits from a popular Disney franchise.”

The publication continued, “Godzilla is closely associated with the modern era, but his presence in the age of piracy feels surprisingly appropriate. This new role changes the character of Godzilla without tampering with his core qualities.

The Pirates of the Caribbean series has an inimitable charm. It revels in wonder and mystery instead of dwelling on the harsh realities of real life piracy. It focuses on tall tales, larger-than-life characters and a romantic view of life on the high seas. This approach has allowed the franchise to fill its hold with ghostly buccaneers, fishy pirates and even a kaiju or two of its own. Additionally, Godzilla has always had a close association with the ocean, making the Pirates of the Caribbean template feel like a natural fit.”

Reportedly, Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons borrows the best elements of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

While this is not yet being turned into a movie, following the success of GODZILLA x KONG: The New Empire, it would not be shocking to see a crossover develop with Pirates, making Godzilla the new villain of the sea.

In a recent update, we reported that Craig Mazin, the mastermind behind HBO’s successful series The Last of Us, presented a concept for the sixth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, rumored to be a reboot. Mazin expressed initial disbelief, thinking the idea was too peculiar to be accepted, yet to his surprise, it was embraced. This version very likely, however, did not contain Godzilla.

Would you like to see a Pirates of the Caribbean and Godzilla mash-up?
