It’s no secret that Kevin Feige’s Marvel Cinematic Universe is suffering from quality control as of late. Even The Walt Disney Company’s CEO, Bob Iger, has been vocal about some of Marvel Studios’ decisions. Now, fans are calling out the next wave of heroes after a Young Avengers poster has gone viral online.

The Marvels (2023), the 33rd movie in the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, has just been released. Unfortunately, as was expected (by some), the sequel to the billion-dollar Captain Marvel (2019) had a franchise-low opening weekend as the decreasing viewership for Marvel projects continues.

Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels was likely the victim of over two years of complaints that Marvel is favoring quantity over quality, something that seems to be rectified moving forward after Marvel and Disney stripped 2024 of all upcoming releases except Deadpool 3 (2024).

Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts (2025) are now releasing a year later, meaning they will air closer to the upcoming Avengers movies, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) — if, that is, in fact, what they will go on to be called. News recently dropped that Kang Dynasty director Daniel Destin Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) parted ways with the project after reports surfaced that writer Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) was always off the upcoming Marvel movie.

The MCU has never felt so fragile. The once-great franchise started 15 years ago with Jon Favreau’s Robert Downey Jr.-starring Iron Man (2008) is now facing its most turbulent time in its history.

Ever since Marvel Phase Four began during the pandemic with WandaVision, the interconnectedness of the MCU has become a turn-off rather than something to celebrate, at least in the eyes of many fans. Now, not only does a viewer ideally need to see the previous installments in the movie slate, but also multiple seasons of TV shows containing six-plus episodes each.

At one point, it seemed that Marvel Studios was ready to replace its old Avengers team-up with a slew of new, younger heroes. From Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow, played by Florence Pugh, to Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, to New Jersey hero Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), there has been an influx of fresh faces in the MCU.

Other characters include Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), the daughter of Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) Maximoff, the sons of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Interestingly, it is near-enough confirmed that Heartstopper star Joe Locke will be playing an older version of Billy, AKA Wiccan, in the upcoming Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.

Despite seemingly lining up a number of big names to play these young characters, characters who, at least in the Marvel Comics world, have been part of the Young Avengers, Marvel apparently has no apparent plans to establish a Young Avengers movie.

However, the ending of The Marvels now suggests otherwise, and a Young Avengers poster has now gone viral on social media, with some fans immediately calling for a new cast and refusing to watch the potential movie. @NewRockstars shares:

The potential Young Avengers.

The unofficial poster, made by AGT Design, has been viewed 25.4 million times, but the response has been largely negative. The poster features America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), Cassie Lang (Newton), Kate Bishop (Steinfeld), Billy (Hilliard), Tommy (Klyne), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), and Ms. Marvel (Vellani).

The hugely viral poster garnered immediate disapproval from fans. One tweet reads, “If I saw a movie poster like this, I might actually vomit,” while another says, “the potential worst opening box office numbers in movie history.” Other comments, like “hard pass,” “trash,” and “flop,” were also made about this potential Young Avengers movie.

The ending of The Marvels may be the first hint of the official Young Avengers team-up in the MCU, but as Marvel Studios reconciles with its ratings and low box office receipts, it may be a long while until these characters get the type of event their predecessors had back in 2012.
