I noticed this prepandemic even. When I went to Disneyland as a child and even again as a young adult, I remember noting how clean everything was. Not a spot of trash on the ground or a chip of paint to be found. In fact, I even remember the first time I brought my own children, challenging them to find such things. Turned out, as it had been several years since I had been there, it wasn’t as difficult to find as I expected, but it was still cleaner/nicer than any other place I’d been. That was in 2018. I returned in 2020, just before the lockdowns, and was disappointed to find trash everywhere, chipped paint on nearly every railing, trash can, and ride, frequent ride outages, broken bits and unrepaired scenery. The Happiest Place on Earth was starting to look like everywhere else. It made me more sad than I would expect. I think it’s because Disneyland isn’t supposed to reflect the real world. It is supposed to be a fantasy world. A place of safety, joy, and imagination. An escape from the grime, grit, and decay of the cities we live in. I used to love Disneyland and long to go back as soon as I left, but I don’t know if I want to pay the money to go back.
