That’s just what I was going to say…how about increasing their salaries! They should prove to their Case Members that they value them, and value that they are making guests happy with their Disney cruise. If people have a bad experience with a Cast Member, no matter how great the ship is, they won’t be coming back! The Cast Members make the cruise what it is. Pay them more money!!! And we can still increase our tips to show our appreciation.
Totally agree. What you tip if at all is up to the guest. We have taken almost 20 Disney cruises and each time we gave based on the service – sometimes more than the recommended amount and sometimes less.
Stop with the gratuity nomenclature and add the fees into the cost of the fare. Gratuity is defined as optional for above par service. This addition is a fee. Call it what it is and avoid the confrontation. US is tip happy. Everyone has their hand out even if service is not provided. I am in favor of tipping a reasonable amount when appropriate, but not everyone does. Solution is to include “tips” in cost of whatever for a true representation of final cost of goods and services. People can then decide on their own whether the item is worth the cost or if their budgets allow for expense. The companies can then pay their employees a regular wage and keep appropriate staff on hand based on actual sales and needs.
While DCL adds it to your onboard account, you can go to guest services or use the onboard chat function to take it off. However, I have always tipped more because honestly they work so incredibly hard with a smile on their face and deserve more in my opinion.
Well you sound like one of those ‘woke’ know-it-all’s who go around pointing out how people who can’t master their mother tongue love to criticize others for supporting something they don’t like!
It is funny this whole tipping thing. I rmember a time when tipping was saved for certain things and it was based on quality of service. Bartenders, waiters and waitresses were the common service group to get tips for service provided. With tips these folks can make a lot more than minimum wage if they were good at their job. Then if someone in another service job went above and beyond you could tip but it was not expected. Then came the tip cups at service counters and coffee shops. Then tipping became expected for housekeeping and the list goes on. now we have the tip added automatically to your bill. I’m sorry but the house keeping staff has to earn at least minimum wage and if they are not the employer is breaking the law. The only people that can be paid less than minimum wage is still waiters and waitresses, however if they don’t make minimum wage after tips then the employer must make up the difference to minimum wage. Now granted this does not apply necessarily to cruises but those are contracted jobs and it is up to the person to negotiate their contract to what they are paid. Now I will tip if you provide me exceptional service or if I have left a mess for the cleaning staff but don’t force me. When something becomes expected it is no longer a reward for doing a job well.
Remember – even though the costs are predetermined, the Guests get to change an amount based on what the services rendered are worth in their (the Guest’s) estimation. If your stateroom host/hostess gave over the moon attention to the room and the Guest, then pay more. If your dining staff left much to be desired, pay the minimum set by the Cruise Line – and no more!
“Although 2021 cruises looked quite different with pandemic protocols still in place, Disney’s huge return to sailing is going well in 2022.” Umm arent pandemic protocols still in place? Last I saw they were still requiring jabs and a brain probe still before you could get on the ship…

I get that it’s mandatory, but I don’t like being forced to pay in advance for services that might or might not be worth that much in gratuity.

They should just increase their crews pay!

It’s not mandatory – it’s by default but you can go to guest services and change it. It’s truly a necessary increase given inflation though.
