I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Cantwell a few years ago in Louisville, Kentucky at the Wonderfest convention. I believe it was his first convention appearance. A delightful man, excited to talk about his Star Wars experience with Mr. Lucas. He told me the circular trench which ran around the middle of the Death Star (where the Millenium Falcon was pulled into) was put there because the 2 hemispheres he was using to make the model design didn’t meet very well there, so he suggested a design change to Lucas (I believe over the phone) but didn’t say why the change and Lucas approved it! I could’ve talked to Mr. Cantwell all day, but a line was starting to form of conventioners waiting to meet him and I had to move on. I will never forget that! A real legend that will be missed! Rest in peace, sir!
WoW 😲😲😲You rock Mr Jackson. How cool are you. His design were Brilliant as well as Bold & Beautiful. What a Legacy to leave behind. Rest Sweetly Mr Cantwell & “May the Force Guide You” in your New Journey.
I always had a reoccurring dream of the land speeder in the early 80s…. always thought we would in reality have floating cars ….Never happened, but what an incredible thought!!!
The X-Wing has long been *the* iconic science fiction starfighter for me… I still get happy chills every time I watch anything Star Wars and the words, “Lock S-Foils in attack position…” is uttered, followed by the simple shift in configuration that yields one of the most recognizable exhaust profiles in movies…
May the Force be with you, Mr. Cantwell, and our sincerest sympathies and condolences to his family and friends.
COLIN CANTWELL BECAME ONE WITH THE FORCE….
HE MADE A CERTAIN GALAXY “FAR, FAR AWAY” SEEM VERY RELATABLE, AWESOME, AND INSPIRING. ELEGANT TECH. PEACE + THE FORCE BE WITH YOU & YOUR BELOVED PARTNER.
I remember watching “The Johnny Carson Show” one Friday night, when I was in sixth grade. Johnny began talking about a new sci Fi movie that would be coming out in the near future. I then saw my first x-wing fighting a tie fighter in space. My life changed from that day on.
Colin Cantwell’s contribution to the Star Wars legacy can’t be underestimated. A true Jedi of production design. The Death Star alone is such a monstrously terrifying extrapolation of the core sci-fi concept of “technology in the wrong hands” and it’s sleek, shiny super militarised look & feel was a genius touch by this master of space design. Personally I loved the X-wing craft. Symbol of liberation they were the cosmic equivalent of a Spitfire & just as nifty, when we finally get to see R2 in his main job as X-wing droid co-pilot we fully realise how immense this little hunk of metal is. Star Wars fans know that R2 is just as much a Jedi as Luke, he’s the hero of almost all “get out” situations across the Canon. Colin left his mark in popular culture, he lived a long & fruitful life, we should celebrate his contributions & wish him a safe, speedy return to the cosmos 🙏
What is sad about his passing? He lived 90 years, was part of one of the greatest film series ever. Had a job he more than likely enjoyed more than most people.
Death is inevitable for everyone, it is sad when a person dies young, from illness or accident, when someone who has lived 9 decades passed, it is not a surprise nor sad. He should be celebrated and feted.
Life is a terminal situation, accept it, enjoy it and cherish those you have in your life that bring you pleasure and joy. If you don’t do these things, then your life is sad
I pray to Jesus he was born again Christian saved in Christ John3:16 and his whole family trees and friends and everyone on planet earth NASA International space station and those in stealth space stations
