Took a Gay turn at the end there. Hey support he writes but that had nothing to do with this article and it’s just pandering in my opinion

    1. Luke

I agree, it’s pandering. He probably never read the bill. Elementary school kids should not be taught or hear about sex, gender, or orientation at school.

      1. Agree 100%. But of course opponents and the media refer to it as “don’t say gay” to mislead people into thinking it is a bad law.

Thank you for posting this story. I was “at” the virtual meeting. Chapek is very good about rattling off words and saying nothing. He didn’t really answer any of the questions posed to him. Additionally, the shareholders (hold onto that criticism for a moment) voted overwhelmingly affirmatively to continue and even raise some elements of the Board of Directors’ salaries and compensation. Now for that comment – and something probably most people don’t know – is just how much of the stock those Board members really hold. Let me just say a huge amount. They are gifted and can purchase what amounts to the vast majority of stock shares – so they are effectively voting for more money/compensation every single year for themselves. And yet they are crying “poverty” about not being able to update and implement things that went by the wayside. Additionally, they tell you how they want you (as a very small shareholder) to vote for everything. I read it all and make my own decisions, but I find it extremely questionable that they think they are going to buy my vote. The Annual Reports for the Company are truly eye-opening.

I’m confused. How can so many projects need to be “refunded” when seemingly nothing has started on them. Disney isn’t a small company getting loans. They just had, as Chapeck said, their best quarter ever. If you are raising the prices for everything, but need to refund projects where is all the money going to if not making sure the parks are working optimally??? Maybe put the money into focusing on getting the current projects done already.

I think in this instance it means return the money to the r&d department that has been cut. Not actually refund money spent.

This CEO needs to go!!!! He talks but says nothing. He is only concerned about what he gets. Projects that have not been started tells me no money paid. He must think no one can see thru him!! How dare him say Disney can’t afford to pay but yet daily there are increases every week. They have had good crowds every day. Now allowing more people to get in. But of course cutting the middle class out. He only wants the rich to come to WDW AND DISNEYLAND. Send the CEO home!!!!

        1. Jess

I don’t think the endgame is to cut out the middle class just swindle us out of all of our money, unfortunately

    2. Ed

I think it means ‘re-funded’. As in reallocating the money to those projects at some point in the future. Big difference between a re-fund and a refund.

This quote “Don’t Say Gay” bill is all smoke and mirrors. The Talking Heads and celebrities coined this name and made a huge stink about this bill without even reading or understanding it. Most people that are mad about it are just parroting what they hear their favorite celebrity say. It’s basically a Parents’ rights bill regarding K-3 age children with regard to teaching about sexuality in schools. And this is completely within their rights.
    1) Children that young have no concept of gender.
    2) Refer to number 1

    1. Matt

You aren’t giving kids enough credit. I didn’t know what sexuality was at that age, I’ll admit, but I was definitely aware of my attraction for other guys. I absolutely hated myself for having “strange” feelings, and I was too afraid to speak about it with anyone else. I’ve come to accept my sexual orientation, but I’ve never gotten over the self-loathing that started at that young age.

People often criticize public schools for not preparing children / teenagers for the real world. “Why does my child need to learn trigonometry? Teach him how to pay his taxes!” I would argue that teaching students how to take care of themselves is the REASON we send them to school. Limiting what teachers can teach is detrimental. I’d hate to always be walking on egg shells.

I’ve read the bill, and while it specifically calls out K – 3, it also includes language that is intentionally vague. Said language allows the State of Florida to determine when students are ready to learn about sexual orientation and gender identity. If the cut off was really 3rd grade, why would they need to add that vague language?

“Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

  5. Erik

Um, I’m going to venture a guess that you don’t have kids. The thought that k-3 don’t have a concept of gender is absurd. My first crush was in kindergarten. I am 42 and have raised 6, the thought that somehow education is going to convert children is assume. Kids are going to grow into whoever they are going to be, the only thing that we as parents can do is educate, and guide, their path is ultimately theirs.
Now on to the real topic of this post. I never thought I’d say I miss Michael Eisner, highest paid CEO in the world during his tenure, but he gave the greenlight to projects I cannot imagine not existing, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon. Frank Wells went too soon but much of what Disney guests experience today is a direct result of Eisner’s tenure. You have to spend the money, make the comments, the investment, cost is unimportant in the long run because they will make it back in spades.
By the way, the history of the Disney Company is one of the most interesting corporate histories out there.

    1. Matt

Exactly! Supporters of HB 1557 (aka: Parental Rights in Education aka: Don’t Say Gay) truly underestimate America’s youth. Children are smarter and more aware of themselves than people seem to give them credit for.

  6. Unfortunately Disney is now run by unimaginative penny pinching money hungry accountants. Build the best rides and bring back fastpass! I was just at WDW and the lines are insane. Genie+ is a ripoff.

      Yes indeed

Old Bob doesn’t have a clue! Build it they will come! Disney has plenty of money! Guess the board members just want to pocket it all!

When EPIC Universe kicks Disneys butt they will VERY MUCH rue the day they hired back Bob Cheap-ek.

Disney seems to forget that people have LONG memories-meaning they come now, have an awful time, and NEVER return!! The idea that getting to ride 3 rides in a day is somehow “a bargain” at $100 (as mentioned in the article) is LUDICROUS!!

I have been a MANY TIME top level annual pass holder. And I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the Fast Pass system. I mean one time, on a Saturday in July, my wife & I and another couple were able to do 13 fast pass rides!!! Today that would be a fantasy. And with Genie+ and “Lighting Lane” I am now Universal Parks Fan Boy……

Disney is currently enjoying pent up demand from sheeple that may be ignorant of the current situation at Disney (Genie+ and Lightning Lane). But that demand WILL SUBSIDE and THATS when the caa caa will hit the fan.

Disney is in DEEP DEPT from too much buying of other holdings, and failed WOKEISM in movie and TV projects (Hello “West Side Story” or “Wrinkle in Time”) that have lost them BILLIONS!! They haven’t even come close to recouping their investment in Star Wars (and won’t with their idioticly priced Galactic Starcruiser) and have found a way to lose $$ with Marvel (Can you say “ETERNALS” or “Black Widow”)…

And Disney+ has yet to make a profit and won’t for years to come!!

Yet the board voted themselves RAISES while the parks suffer from terrible maintenance and breakdowns???

Talk about SHORT SIGHTED!! Universal gets the idea that guest experience comes FIRST, then the $$ will follow. And boy will those $$ follow BIGTIME!!

I believe that Disney stock is ARTIFICIALLY being propped up some how. In fact, there was recent talk of an investigation into that very thing because of a Disney whistle blower. Man what a crash to come!

I for one wonder if one day I will walk through an abandoned Disney Springs and say “…remember what used to be here?…” Nothing is “too big to fail”! But it seems like the Disney Co, in all of its arrogance seems to believe that they are. They have there cadre of sycophants, but no where near enough to keep them going permanently….

    1. Michael Shimer

After many years, we’ve also decided to move our vacation time to Universal Studios as Florida annual pass holders. Many other Floridians are as well, from what we have seen at least anecdotally. Universal still has a guest-first approach, which apparently Disney doesn’t under Bob “Cheapek”. What they do have is a shareholder first, second, third, and last mentality. But with this looming U.S. and worldwide recession on the horizon and gas price averages most likely over $5 a gallon by this summer, they’re going to really miss those Florida guests that are now regulars just a few miles east on I-4….

Hence why disney putting cost up for the public to pay for these new devolpment, this CEO hasn’t got a clue how to run disney, only interested in filling his pockets , time disney went back to how walt disney visioned disney world, disneyland, this isn’t turning out to be the most magical place, but a wealthy Park for the rich
    DISNEY IS GOT GREEDY
AND SHOULD HANG THEIR HEADS IN SHAME, TURNING A PARK FOR FAMILIES INTO A RICH FEST
WALT BE TURNING IN HIS GRAVE HOW THESE LEECHES HAS MADE DISNEY NOW
WALT DISNEY HAS A VISION, A VISION FOR ALL FAMILIES TO ENJOY & AFFORD
NOT FILL THE CEO POCKETS WITH CASH & WORKING CLASS FAMILIES NOT ABLE TO AFFORD 😡😡😡😡
DISNEY NOT A HAPPY PLACE ANYMORE

But they can fund numerous Disney Themed “housing development” that are slated across the United States?????? Where is the priority – oh wait – it is what market and demographic can we tap now in order to line our pockets!

They found money to fund an unnecessary renovation of Splash Mountain, but can’t fund a much needed renovation of Spaceship Earth or that awful Figment Atrocity?

  12. Ken Brenner

    Hi.
I am a long-time WDW fan and yearly attendee (staying at the Dolphin Hotel each time).
I am hoping that the change of Splash Mountain and Spaceship Earth do NOT happen.
There’s nothing wrong with Splash Mountain, and Spaceship Earth is fine as it is.
Not everything has to change – traditional Disney is what makes it a popular place.

One question: When will your Florida guests not have to walk from the far flung reaches of the Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios parking lots!? Stop being such a darn penny pincher and magical experiences killer and start thinking at least a little about upholding Walt Disney’s magical legacy. Here’s a challenge: maybe Parks division should have created another “Year of a Million Dreams” theme for this year’s Magic Kingdom 50th anniversary, instead of a full speed ahead drive to kill all the joy in so many ways, under the guise of still reacting to the pandemic.
