As far as I can tell, everyone in the fantasy community agrees that what Amazon is producing is not Lord of The Rings. Some of the names are the same, but the characters and concepts that Amazon is pushing are so different than what Tolkien wrote, that it’s really a very different story. The overall response has been extremely negative.

    1. Craig

Sorry but what? Explain what concepts are being changed/how characters are being changed from what Tolkien wrote?

      1. Gregson Vaux

Go to Youtube and search for “Rings of Power woke”. You will find hundreds of videos explaining in detail all of the changes between what Tolkien wrote and what Amazon is trying to create.

        1. Simon Jones

Who writes these so called “expert” articles. Galafriel “”became immortal “??????

      2. Backcountry164

Far, FAR too much to even just list in a comment section.

      3. Lfish

One hundred percent it’s like changing one of the female x men to zena and her personality looks super lame. She looks like a lame human warrior chick with teenage rage. No thanks.

        1. Sylvia Roberts

Tolkeins work has been messed about enough so will not be watching x the films though well made in parts tried to make LOTR into a romance which it was not x wont forgive the taking out of Glorfindel a high e

        @ Craig:
        Pretty much everything.
Any youtuber you care to name has a video up – go spend 5 minutes and learn, because its LUDICROUS

    2. Karen

      I agree!!!

  2. Stephen Disney

The fact that you think LOTR characters can be “rebooted” makes you look ignorant… Just a heads up.

    1. M

      This!

    2. Dico

If only rebooted it will be fine, but they change everything from them, it’s too far from what tolkien been describing this characters are. Their ability, the way they look, their nature, their background, etc.
In simple if they change the characteristic of more than one main character then for sure it will change the story line.

That’s why people been agreeing that this new series are not LOTR.

You need to find out more before accusing ppl ignorant, it is you the who ignoring the real story itself

  3. Collin

No, you’ll find hundreds of racist nerds angry about casting and only concerned with Canon when it comes to character skin color.

    1. Collin

This was a rely to Gregson, but this commenting software is bad.

      1. Backcountry164

Lol! Everyone else seems to be able to figure it out. Are you sure it’s the software??

    2. Mango

If I’m going to be called a racist, fine. I’m not, but fine. Tolkien himself addressed this decades ago. Middle earth is based on English, celtic, and Scandinavian mythology and history. There are zero melanated characters in the Silmarillion. Even if there was, it wouldn’t be a dwarf. Explain how a dwarf retains melanin when they primarily live in caves and Middle earth is nothing like Africa. Biologically it makes zero sense. It’s not about racism. It’s about being faithful to what Tolkien created and this isn’t it. Not even close.

      1. Karen

Absolutely correct. But of course if they don’t agree the answer is always racism. Aghhh

    3. Backcountry164

The race swaps are the least of the changes. But it’s all we hear about because simple-minded people can’t have a debate or listen to criticism. They just stick their fingers in thier ears and start blathering on about racism…

    4. Russ

So, I guess it would be no big deal, if black panther were to be rebooted, with a pasty white guy like Christian Bale, right? That would in no way upset Fans of black panther, right? It would still be authentic, right? You libs are such hypocrites šŸ™„

      1. Karen

        So True!

    5. The Emperor

Come up with a better reason. Calling people racist or phobic is pretty old and hasn’t worked.
Fact is the lore is not being respected, and all this train wreck will do is continue to prove that going woke is a good way to go broke.

    6. S.Moloney

      @ Collin
      YOU ARE A LIAR SIR.

Galadriel became immortal when she moved to Lothlorien? Man, between that bine-headed comment and all the cutting and pasting from a wiki, this is a pathetic “article.” Didn’t this site have a single writer who has actually read the books?

    1. Backcountry164

Hey why not?? Makes as much sense as the changes Amazon has made to the character. But for some reason you don’t seem to be concerned whether or not anyone making this show has “actually read the books”. Because it sure doesn’t seem so…

  5. Backcountry164

    Tolkien in name only…

  6. I am just thrilled that any continuation of LOTR stories are being made, that it really doesn’t matter who stars in them. Yes it would have been wonderful if some of the original stars was in this series. But maybe next one. There are plenty of other stories to tell.

  7. 2stroke

Oh my God, have you ever read the books.
If so you obviously retained very little from it.

  8. J

    Aramayo not Arayamo
Was there an editor? This is basic.

  9. CJ

I want to reserve judgment until I have watched the LOTR Series from Amazon, however, let me just say I don’t have a problem with who is playing which Character …. I have a problem with consistency to the Tolkien Books (ie Female Dwarves have beards, too!)

This is a very expensive investment / expensive adaption \ expensive rights obtained by the Tolkien Estate (Amazon concerns should be about not only upsetting the LOTR fan base and losing them, but also upsetting Tolkien’s Estate and finding themselves in an expensive Court battle!)

Try to look at it this way (before passing judgment on the passionate Tolkien Fanbase), what if the Characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse were changed into Characters so far removed from their traditional appearance? Do you think Walt Disney Fans would accept that right away, or do you realize a vast majority would become upset (and condemn)?

What if the Character of Darth Vader was drastically changed from its depiction within the Star Wars Films, animated TV Series, Comic Books, etc – do you think the Star Wars fan base would accept that, or will the majority of them vocally share their displeasure? (if you lose a fan base? there goes your potential to earn a profit!)

I’m choosing not to use the word woke …. I’m choosing to say, “be careful when adapting anything, choose wisely, please don’t make mistakes, and don’t disrespect the fan base!”

  10. Roxanne Seaton

As soon as I read “Galadriel became immortal” when she came to Lothlorien, I decided enough is enough. I am not even going to watch this; I’d just get angry.

  11. G

Amazon money producing fastfood from Tolkien’s work. Nothing we’ve seen so far feels real. Even Jackson’s LOTR fell to Hollywood cliche by Return of the King. Amazon most likely will give us Game of Thrones, season 8.

  12. James

Did you all not see the biggest fk up? Galadriel and Elrond were ā€œFRIENDSā€ for centuries? Who is this moron???????!

  13. Judas

This article sucks hard. ā€œChanged foreverā€ it says, then fails to explain its own premise.
ā€œBecomes immortal at the forestā€.. good god, WHO wrote this?! And ya wonder why LotR fans are annoyed already, when even the article writers canā€™t be bothered to give a damn.
Puke on Tolkien for a dollar huh. Nice.
A billion dollars and Amazon could have had the proper source material!!! Idiots now have to script crap just like this article. FFS

  14. Joana

WTF is this article, really who wrote it?
I just hope they cancel this awful show after season 1, completely disgraceful.

  15. Rat

No. A big NO. Everything that has had any happy fan base has been ultimately butchered with the decadence of society as it stands currently. Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who all fell victim to ideological drama and crap. The best thing to do, which I myself have done with the above mentioned series, is ignore it. Thankfully Tolkienā€™s Literature will remain intact and unmolested. Pick up a book, put down the ā€œidiot boxā€

  16. Robert

Oh, Iā€™m pretty sure these characters arenā€™t changed for good. This is basically a billion dollar fanfic and fanfics have never altered peoplesā€™ view of the source material.

  17. EOh

Shill article helping Amazon with damage control. Trying too. They keep shoveling the racist card but they’re the ones pushing race where it makes little sense. Why?

And yes. They have changed Galadriels character based on the little I’ve seen ( but willing to see an episode to be certain).

As someone said, LOTR in name only. And it may be very good fantasy but not true to the heart of Tolkien literature.

Suggest anyone curious go and Google ” Reddit LOTR Amazon”. It looks like Amazon created a mess much worse than Peter Jackson’s version of The Hobbit.

Hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

Personally I don’t like it one bit. You can’t just add characters, change facts change anything and act like it’s still the same. We are talking about a masterpiece that does not need to be changed in any way shape or form. once again it’s Hollywood trying to cash in and change things that don’t need to be changed. I was very excited when I heard that there was going to be a series until I started reading up on it now it just makes me angry that people think that they have the right to go in and change whatever they want to make a few bucks. I’m a purist if it’s on paper printed published, then that’s the way it should be that’s the way the author meant it to be and that’s the way it should stay. If you can’t work in those parameters then it should be left well enough alone.

  20. S.Moloney

    For good eh?
Well we know you are an idiot and a shill and therefore to quote Galdalf you can “Keep your forked tongue behind your lips.”
Eveey change made by the HACKS at Amazon. is what we call a TRAVESTY.

  21. Sean

“For good” šŸ¤¦ No, allowing activists to put their toxic, one sided, extremist rhetoric into flashy prapoganda, is not good. They won’t stop until everything has a black fist and rainbow flag, and everyone who is not in compliance is a third class citizen must be evil monsters who should have no voice.

  22. BK

Honestly, I ignored all the negative things people were saying about the Amazon Wheel of Time “adaptation” and gave it a shot. 3 episodes in, I completely gave up on it. Frankly, it is unrecognizable to anyone not familiar with the source material, and at the same time makes no sense to anyone who has not read the books. This “adaptation” of LotR seems to be following the same path. So it’s a hard no from me.

  23. Gatlicbread

This has got to be the laziest and most uninformative article ever.

“Power of the Rings”? It’s “rings of power” Elrond and Galadriel are “Friends”?

I could go on. Shockingly bad research, I just hope this person (or was it really a bot?) wasn’t paid for this joke of an article.

  24. Jody

I was looking forward to seeing this series until I heard about the changes. This is no different than if “Black Panther” was remade with White and Asian characters in place of some of the main characters.
The only difference in the public would freak out if “Black Panther” was changed and only the TRUE fans of Tolkien are pissed about this.
To think that the writers at Amazon Prime know better than Tolkien about what Tolkien’s vision for his world that was created using his knowledge of ANCIENT EUROPEAN folklore is laughable.

    1. Dado

      My wiener hurts.

  25. Chris

This article is one the laziest pieces of garbage I’ve ever read. Copying large chunks from a wiki is just embarrassing. Couldn’t even be bothered to spell “Aragorn” right.

  26. TheBest

It’s shocking what they have done vs Tolkiens very explicit character descriptions. They now have Noggits for example. The Shire used to be crime free…
