When the COVID-19 pandemic forced most of the world to shut down, the cruise industry was hit particularly hard. Even as things slowly began to open back up and life tried to get back to some form of normal, the cruise industry was still on pause since it was deemed unsafe to keep a large number of people in an insulated area for an extended period.
Finally, in August, Disney Cruises once again set sail in a limited capacity.
Also back in August, Disney Cruise Line confirmed that all Guests 12 and over who were sailing on its ships would be required to show proof of vaccination before boarding. Children under 12 are exempt from this order as they cannot currently be vaccinated and while they are allowed to sail, Disney has announced another big change if they want to disembark at various ports.
The Disney Cruise Line website has updated its Know Before You Go information page to now say:
Fully vaccinated Guests who wish to disembark the ship while in a port of call can do so without purchasing a Disney Cruise Line Port Adventure. Guests who are vaccinated and wish to disembark the ship with unvaccinated children will need to purchase a Disney Cruise Line Port Adventure. All Guests are required to adhere to local laws, regulations and protocols, including those related to health and safety, in place at the destination.
In the past, when a Disney Cruise ship has docked in a port, Guests are allowed to disembark and go off on their own, or they could book a Port Adventure — a choice which is still available to all Guests who are fully vaccinated.
Here is more information on Port Adventures offered by Disney:
Port Adventures—shore excursions that have been specially selected by Disney Cruise Line—provide you and your family with the very best each destination has to offer. Whether flightseeing over vast canyons, exploring undersea worlds or discovering another culture’s traditions, make the most of your cruise with memorable experiences for everyone in your family in exotic ports of call.
It is important to note that the Port Adventures purchase is not required for Disney Cruise Guests when they disembark at Castaway Cay — Disney’s own private island.
Disney also notes that Port Adventures are currently running at a limited capacity and are subject to availability and may change based on port restrictions and operator limitations.
