Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a fan-favorite ride at Disney Parks around the world, from Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in the U.S. to Disneyland Paris and Tokyo Disneyland. The California version of the attraction has been closed for refurbishment since early September, but now we’re happy to report some good news — a tentative reopening date for the Frontierland coaster!

Refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland

Since September 7, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland at Disneyland Park has been closed for refurbishment. The Disneyland website stated the following about the scheduled refurbishment work, but at the time, a reopening date was not posted on this webpage or the Disneyland Resort refurbishment calendar.

As noted above, at the time of the initial announcement of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment in Disneyland, a reopening date wasn’t announced, though Disney did state that the attraction was expected to reopen sometime in “fall 2021.” Well, we’re happy to report that now we have an update!

From September 7 through November 4, “No Times Available” is stated for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on the Disneyland Resort official website. However, from November 5 onward, the attraction is shown to be open during regular theme park hours. So, it appears that November 5 is now the reopening date for “The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!”

Keep in mind that reopening dates for attractions that have undergone refurbishments are tentative and subject to change. At this time, it looks like Disneyland has set the reopening date for Big Thunder to be November 5, 2021, but that could change and the ride could reopen earlier or later. For now, we’re looking forward to hopefully riding this roller coaster on November 5, and we’ll report back if we have any other updates regarding this attraction at Disneyland!

More on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

Per the official Disneyland website:

Hang Onto Yer Hats!

Legend has it that after gold was discovered in the 1850s, eerie incidents took place in the mine. Trains would take off and race through tunnels… by themselves.

As you enter the cursed cavern, your train speeds up along the rickety track. Shoot under a booming waterfall and dodge a falling boulder from an unexpected landslide as you swoop around sharp turns and drop into desolate canyons.

On this rip-roaring adventure, you may learn that some legends turn out to be true…

How Scary Is it?

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a fast rollercoaster-type attraction designed for kids and adults. However, some sections of this attraction are bumpy and take place in the dark.

A Bit of Disneyland Lore

The miniature ghost town of Big Thunder that you roll past at the end of the attraction predates Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Originally named Rainbow Ridge, the town is one of several elements from the Rainbow Caverns Mine Train (later called Mine Train through Nature’s Wonderland) that transported Guests around Frontierland from 1956 to 1977.
