Guests visiting the Disneyland Resort this fall may miss out on a key attraction. This September will see one of the theme park’s biggest coasters close for a temporary refurbishment.
As one of the more popular coasters situated in the Disneyland Resort, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a signature icon of the original Disney Park. Located in Frontierland in Disneyland Park, the Western-inspired thrill ride is a classic attraction and is featured across the world in four of Disney’s theme parks, including the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Many attractions and hotels have recently closed for refurbishment at Walt Disney World in anticipation of the 50th anniversary celebrations commencing October 1, 2021, but Disneyland Park will also see some refurbishments this coming fall.
Per the Disneyland website, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed from September 7, 2021, for an indefinite period of time. The information shared on the attraction page online is as follows:
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be closed for refurbishment beginning September 7 and is expected to reopen fall 2021. Please check back here for updates.
This may come as a disappointment to Guests hoping to ride the popular coaster on their upcoming vacation to the Disneyland Resort. Despite this temporary closure, Guests can still enjoy a whole host of other attractions from across Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. And there’s still Downtown Disney too.
Be sure to check the Disneyland website or the Disneyland App for updates regarding the reopening of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the California theme park.
More on the iconic coaster
If you haven’t ridden Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before, here is what you can expect if you will be visiting Disneyland Park in Anaheim before it closes for refurbishment.
Legend has it that after gold was discovered in the 1850s, eerie incidents took place in the mine. Trains would take off and race through tunnels… by themselves.
As you enter the cursed cavern, your train speeds up along the rickety track. Shoot under a booming waterfall and dodge a falling boulder from an unexpected landslide as you swoop around sharp turns and drop into desolate canyons.
On this rip-roaring adventure, you may learn that some legends turn out to be true…
Interestingly, the attraction has also been linked to medical science — the Disney theme park coaster can apparently help pass kidney stones!
