As Disney Parks continues to debut new projects, they also continue to update technology and audio-animatronics so that they can fully immerse Guests into the storyline of the ride or attraction. Now, as the “Tiana project” is top of mind for everyone, many are wondering what Disney Imagineering has up their sleeves for the retheme of Splash Mountain into a The Princess and the Frog-themed ride.

Well, thanks to newly released information, we now have confirmation that Disney Imagineering is looking for ways to advance storytelling and “change the game” with new technology and audio-animatronics for the The Princess and the Frog retheme of Splash Mountain.

When discussing how the audio-animatronics and technology will be important to the story and the ride, especially in the 21st century, Charita Carter, Senior Producer for Walt Disney Imagineering, explained:

“I can tell you as Imagineers, first of all, we are always interested in expanding our storytelling and advancing our storytelling techniques so with this particular project, the way that we are approaching our audio-animatronic figures would be an example of how we are looking to advance the storytelling and really just kind of change the game as well as the way we are approaching our scenic illusions and our visual effects so that we can create an immersive environment that is seamless for Guests.”

We know that Disney Imagineering is always looking for new ways to immerse Guests into the storylines of rides and attractions, as we have seen recently with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway as well as with Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. If those rides are any indication as to what we will see in the upcoming Tiana-themed ride, it’s safe to say Guests will be blown away by the technology and audio-animatronics Imagineering plans to use.

You can watch the full roundtable here:

At this time, we do not have a date as to when Disney will make these changes to Splash Mountain at Disneyland and Disney World, but Melissa Valiquette, Vice President of Magic Kingdom recently stated “When we are reimagining a new attraction or area, this can be a lengthy process”, indicating it could be some time before we see Tiana take over Splash Mountain.

Inside the Magic will keep you updated as we get information.

Splash Mountain is currently located at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. The official Disney World description reads:

A Hare-Raising Ride

Gently drift through a colorful Southern bayou along with happy-go-lucky Br’er Rabbit as he looks for his “laughing place.” But be warned: Br’er Bear and Br’er Fox are in hot pursuit of this wayward hare.

Glide by over 100 adorable Audio-Animatronics geese, frogs, raccoons, possums, bees, alligators and other down-home critters as they sing classic Disney ditties, including “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” and “Ev’rybody’s Got a Laughing Place.”

Then hang on to your hats—this delightful musical cruise ends in an exciting 5-story splashdown into a thorny Briar Patch!

You Will Get Wet

This attraction includes 950,000 gallons of water, 3 dips and a 5-story drop. Where you’re seated will determine how wet you’ll get. Riders in the back may experience a sudden splash or spray; those who opt for the front can expect to get soaked.

For Guests looking to ensure their personal items remain dry, lockers are available to rent near the Main Entrance.
