Credit: DisneyDisney World has many added offerings that make each park magical, but at Magic Kingdom, there are a few unique bonuses specifically to that theme park. One of those offerings is the Main Street Philharmonic band that marches down Main Street, U.S.A., as well as through the park.
When Guests hear a marching band coming up behind them in Magic Kingdom, it is tough not to stop in your tracks and take a moment to listen to the musicians play a Disney tune. The idea of having a marching band come through Magic Kingdom at Disney World has been an offering since the first day the park opened, and now, 50 years later, the tradition continues.
Recently, Disney Parks Blog reported on a special Guest returning to the Most Magical Place on Earth. Dave Phillips was part of the 1,076-member marching band that paraded down Main Street, U.S.A., to celebrate Walt Disney World Resort’s grand opening on October 25, 1971. He now has returned to Disney World these years later with his daughter and grandson to relive the magic.
Dave spoke about the day as if it were very vivid in his memory. He mentioned how Mickey Mouse led the marching band and how he was floored the first time he walked into the park and saw Cinderella Castle for the first time. Disney Parks Blog went on to note:
Music has always been important to Dave and his family. Dave’s father, who was a music teacher in Central Florida, encouraged him to play trombone for his high school band. After missing the in-person Grand Opening Parade audition, Dave sent in a cassette tape to demonstrate his talents. He was later chosen to join the 1,076-member marching band, directed by “The Music Man” composer Meredith Wilson.
When Dave made his return all these years later, he had a chance to speak with members of the current Main Street Philharmonic band to recount stories and exchange experiences. It truly seemed like a magical homecoming for the musician!
