Everyone is excited about Thor: Love and Thunder. Especially director Taika Waititi. In its big announcement on Monday, Marvel Studios finally revealed that Love and Thunder will premiere on May 6, 2022, which means we’re closer than ever to seeing Thor on the big screen again. And even though we’re getting sorcerers, super spies, and archers, Waititi is convinced that his movie is going to knock all the other Marvel films out of the park.
Asked about his experience making the film during an appearance on Australia’s Weekend Today, Waititi couldn’t help himself from excitedly teasing his new project, which is in the final stages of filming.
“We’ve got four weeks left, I can see light at the end of the tunnel. It might be the best Marvel film ever.”
Thor: Ragnarok essentially re-vitalized the character’s entire movie trajectory when it debuted In 2017, breathing new life into the story of one of the original Avengers by giving fans a film that was closer to Guardians of the Galaxy than Captain America: The First Avenger. The gamble to make a departure from Thor’s normally serious story and display a funnier and more honest character paid off in spades, and Waititi soon became part of the Marvel family, returning to helm the current sequel.
As a director, Waititi spent a lot of time with Hemsworth. But he also connected with him as an actor, both in Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame, as Thor’s gentle friend Korg. (He’ll return in Love and Thunder to reprise the character.)
“He is a funny guy, he’s a good friend, and he’s also someone that you just want to hang out with all the time. And I think that’s all you really want from a superhero or a main character in your movie,” Waititi said of Hemsworth.
Thor 4: Love And Thunder will bring back Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie. Natalie Portman, Thor’s former love interest, will return to play Jane Foster—a character who may end up taking the Thor mantle given that the story is reportedly based on Jason Aaron’s acclaimed comic run where Jane Foster assumes control of Mjolnir. Not many details are known so far, but Christian Bale will join the cast as Gorr The God Butcher and set photos have floated around that tease an appearance from Star-Lord (Chris Pratt)—remember, Thor did leave on the Benatar with the rest of the Guardians after Endgame, so there Waititi could have some fun with that.
