Following the announcement by the U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention that face masks are no longer required for fully vaccinated persons engaging in most activities, the Universal Orlando Resort announced that they would no longer require masks outdoors for its theme Park Guests, beginning tomorrow. Now, it appears that the Walt Disney World Resort is following suit and eliminating face mask requirements for Guests while they are outdoors.

Disney World recently updated its health and safety guidelines on its website, which now reads:

Face coverings are required for all Guests (ages 2 and up) and Cast Members. Please bring your own face coverings and wear them in all indoor locations, except when actively eating or drinking while stationary and maintaining appropriate physical distancing. Face coverings are optional in outdoor common areas at Walt Disney World Resort, but are still required upon entering and throughout all attractions, theaters and transportation.

This change in Disney World’s mask policy comes after Orange County, Florida Mayor Jerry Demings’ announcement that 50% of Floridians age 16 and older had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. By reaching that threshold, the county would be able to ease up on face mask mandates and no longer require face masks when outdoors — this policy shift would also extend to theme parks.

Disney World was not the only Theme Park to take advantage of that change in mask policy and update its health and safety protocols. Universal Orlando Resort was quick to take the news of relaxed face-covering policies and make the change to their website, which now states:

Disney World had required face masks since the theme parks reopened in July 2020 after a four-month-long closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guests should remember that face coverings will still be required while indoors, except when actively eating or drinking.
