Walt Disney World is continuing with the phased reopening of the resort. As many things have reopened with modifications, some remain temporarily closed.
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto is a fan-favorite bar among Guests at Walt Disney World, with its themed cocktails and over-the-top atmosphere. Located at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort — which is not fully open yet, with certain dining locations closed and with several resort renovations still underway– Trader Sam’s has remained closed with no announcement of a reopening date by Disney.
Will we see Disney announce a reopening for Trader Sam’s soon? Or will it remain temporarily closed even when the Polynesian reopens?
Trader Sam’s Gog Grotto is a beautiful tiki bar tucked away on the first floor of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Here is how Disney describes the bar:
Head in to this tranquil hideaway for an enchanting evening packed with fantastic fun and delightful surprises. Explore the whimsically themed lounge—overrun with ancient artifacts and exotic treasures—or set sail for the open-air Tiki Terrace for a relaxing sip or nibble under the starry sky, complete with the melodious sounds of live Hawaiian-themed musical entertainment.
The bar is small, and Disney notes on their website that Guests can anticipate a wait when they visit. Before the pandemic, Trader Sam’s would often require those wanting a seat to sit with other parties if they wished to enjoy the indoor ambiance of the bar.
There is an outdoor section of Trader Sam’s bar called Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace that can accommodate more Guests. However, it lacks the immersive experience and special effects found indoors.
Currently, most of the Polynesian Village Resort is closed. Only Disney Vacation Club villas are available for DVC members, as the resort is going through a large-scale refurbishment. Disney has stated that the Polynesian will reopen in the summer of 2021 — or, at least, summer 2021 is when the Moana-themed rooms will be ready for Guests to experience, and vacation bookings for this summer at the Poly are already available.
So when Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort reopens this summer, will Trader Sam’s open with it?
Since Disney has not given fans of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto any hint of a possible reopening date for the bar, we are looking at the current guidelines for the CDC to help us find the answer. Of course, nothing is for certain until Disney makes an official announcement.
According to the current guidance from the CDC for restaurants and bars, you may eat indoors if proper precautionary measures are taken. These include social distancing, mask enforcement, enhanced cleaning by the bar or restaurant, and other safety practices. One thing we have seen at Disney World is the addition of safety barriers by way of plexiglass. With the small size of Trader Sam’s, we could see plexiglass added to the indoor bar area.
But will Disney do this? It is possible, but it could be more likely that we could actually see a phased reopening of Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto instead. Perhaps the outdoor Tiki Terrace will reopen with social distancing measures in place, allowing Guests to order alcoholic beverages from the walk-up window and enjoy the atmosphere outside. Then, it’s possible that the indoor location will reopen at a later date when it makes more sense for Disney to reopen the small space of the indoor bar.
We will just have to wait and see if Trader Sam’s reopens with the Polynesian later this summer.
For now, those who are staying or visiting the Polynesian can enjoy a drink at the Tambu Lounge.
What do you think? Will Trader Sam’s reopen this summer, or will it be postponed? Do you hope the Tiki Terrace reopens as soon as possible so you can order your favorite beverage outside? Let us know in the comments.
