While I appreciate the argument, the majority of the stories where the stepmother is depicted as evil are over 100 years old, and there needs to be some sort of antagonist for a movie to be exciting. You don’t see as many evil stepmothers in recent movies with modern stories, but stories like Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel it’s a key point to the narrative. I understand the argument, but I do think that making a petition for every single thing which a large corporation like Disney will look at and throw out in less than 10 minutes, there are better ways to fight your point.

I absolutely agree. It’s seems absurd to me that lately everyone is so critical of things such as books and movies. I’m glad I grew up when things were a bit more accepted. I share these with my grandchildren and we have a discussion if it’s needed but we don’t dwell on these negative parts. It’s part of the story, many of them very old. I’d sooner have the story as it is than have all of them removed and show our children that everything is all roses because life isn’t. I cannot even begin to think of how our next entitled group of young adults will act.

Absolutely right. I grew up on these stories, and it was explained to me, and I explained to my children, that they are simply stories, works of fiction.

People need to watch ‘Enchanted’. Giselle became a stepmother to Morgan and she was the sweetest character imaginable.

I think I was a great stepmother, on the other hand, the woman who married my father after my mother died makes these characters look tame.

    But it’s Change.org, so who cares? 😉

(And we got into this discussion about the original tales a hundred times on children’s-book discussions:
A biological mother would never send her children out into the woods to save on food, or make them scrub floors because they were “lazy” or “ungrateful” for her parenting; a hormonally-unattached foster mother, unfortunately, too often would. And sometimes does, even in our modern system.)

Stupid absolutely stupid. Claire there’s people that do not have anything to do and just need to make up something to petition or cry about.

  6. Chris

This is just stupid. Find something better to do with your time.

    OMG! Enough already.

  8. Disney IS NOT depicting stepmoms as Evil, just this one, and it’s necessary for the story line !!! Stop being a bunch of sensitive “powder puffs”!!

  9. SplashFan

Getting tired of all these over sensitive crybabies just SEARCHING for things to be offended by! Enough is enough! Oh and #SaveSplashMountain

    SERIOUSLY!
They’d rather petition this and not the killing off of the main characters parents???

Give it a rest – We already lived through this “controversy” back in the 1970s.

Agree with almost all comments so far. Plus it isn’t even Disney’s story to change.

    1. CM

So what you’re really saying is that you’re offended by people being offended….

These narratives have essentially allowed society to judge and ostracize second wives at liberty. It is an unfair character assassination and second husbands do not endure a fraction of what women do. In many cases, the failure of marriages and nuclear families are projected onto innocent women just wanting to find happiness and a sense of belonging (this does not include affairs that break up marriages). I think it’s high time the narrative is reinvented to correct the damage done by generalizing the position as evil. Those who disagree are welcome to actually try on the thankless and devoid of any love or appreciation job of step-parenting for size for a few years and get back to us with your much needed life lesson.
