Just rewatched it this past weekend…and I love this movie. I think with what they had it worked out and made a good movie and I still prefer it over…tons of other Disney films I admit. (plus still think Eilonwy deserves to be part of the Princess line but what do I know)

To save time for those who ask, Disney canon has already spoken ex cathedra:
      – Eilonwy’s kingdom was destroyed by the Horned King, so you can’t be Princess of nothing.
      – Leia: Ditto.
      – Kida gave up her throne to go exploring with Milo
      – Giselle never actually married the prince, did she?

I love The Black Cauldron! I’ve watched it countless times and I always find myself entertained and loving the characters. I keep meaning to buy the books the movie is based on but haven’t yet, but I do love it. It’s definitely underrated, but it was released at a time when Disney were still struggling to find their feet following Walt’s death, as well as a lot of the 9 Old Men. But I love it, maybe being released when you have movie franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones and big epics like that just overshadow it, but the Horned King is terrifying. It may potentially have worked better as a live action epic series doing the full Prydain saga, and it is one of the only movies I would like to see remade as live action. But yeh, it’s definitely in my top 10 from the Animation Studio canon.

My sister and I were both young fans of the books, which were still school-reading-list hot when the movie came out. We didn’t see the movie together, but when we compared reviews, our opinions turned out to be pretty much the exact same words: “What a colossal WASTE OF TIME.”
(We’d read the books, y’see, so we weren’t later VHS fans going “Oo, z0mbi333s!! It’s a SCARY cartoon!”)

One time, I wrote Lloyd Alexander a fan letter, and asked what he thought of the movie–He said his grandkids liked it for an afternoon, and it was an…okay attempt to try and tackle it, but it “should have been a live-action movie.”
I’m of the opinion Disney shouldn’t have hired the hack “Swan Princess” director at the last second, either.

I love this movie. Deftly one of my favorite underrated Disney films. Since Disney is playing to adapt the whole book series this movie space dawn it has a lot of potential. Super excited for that.

Definitely My favorite underrated Disney movie. Since disney’s going to readapt the Chronicles of Prydain book series into a movie series. I see a lot of potential since the series is what this movie is based on. Deathly deserves a second chance since Disney is going to redo this.
