In an incredibly surprising move, runDisney has not cancelled the upcoming Star Wars Rival Run Weekend at Walt Disney World Resort. The event is scheduled to take place on April 16-19, 2020.
runDisney today issued an advisory stating that they “continue to monitor the evolving COVID-19 situation and are in regular contact with state and local authorities and health agencies. We will share updates about the race weekend here.” The full statement can be read below:
Fans are already having mixed reactions to the news, with some indicating that they are shocked Disney is even considering not postponing the race and others bolstered by the thought that Disney Parks could reopen by their originally scheduled date of April 1.
The CDC has indicated that no gatherings of 50+ should occur until well after the run is scheduled, so the fact that Disney has not officially cancelled the event is especially shocking.
It is worth noting that the virtual portions of the two runDisney Kessel Run Challenge options (which include the Rival Run Half & Virtual Half or Rival Run Challenge & Virtual Half) are likely to still continue. runDisney has not yet issued a statement specifically about virtual runs.
If you are currently registered to participate in the Star Wars Rival Run Weekend, contact (407) 939-4786 for additional information. Inside the Magic will continue to monitor runDisney’s announcements regarding the Star Wars runs and update accordingly.
Disney Parks executives have not yet issued any new information about theme park reopening dates. If the runDisney weekend does continue as scheduled, numerous Disney Springs retailers and restaurants that have announced 6-12 week closures will be unavailable to guests. As always, ITM will bring you the latest details as they are given.
