While the Animation Academy experiences at Walt Disney World and Disneyland might not be open right now, you can still hone your animators’ chops at home! Disney has posted free online sessions with Cast Member, Stephen Ketchum.
In each video, Ketchum teaches students to draw a version of Mickey Mouse, from Walt Disney’s original 1920s iteration to the modern Mickey we all know and love today. The online Animation Academy classes are for Disney fans of all skill levels. Whether you already love to draw or you’ve never sketched before, you’ll still have fun with this at-home activity!
The first “How to Draw Mickey” video featuring Ketchum is under 5 minutes long and teaches viewers how to sketch Mickey like Disney animators would have in the late 1920s. Simple shapes, like a circle and short curved lines are the basis of this vintage Mickey.
In a second video, Ketchum shows would-be animators of all ages how to draw a mid-century style Mickey Mouse. This iteration involves adding a few key shapes to the 1920s sketch.
In the final video in the series, Ketchum sketches a contemporary, “pie eyed” Mickey Mouse that starts with an oval instead of a circle. This version of Mickey is similar to what we see at Disney Parks and on the Disney Channel today!
