For those of you planning a trip to Walt Disney World next year, take note. It looks like the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness is going to shut down for most of May.

According to Walt Disney World’s website, the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad shows no available ride times from Monday, May 4, to Thursday, May 21. The ride appears to open back up on Friday, May 22.

While there is no confirmed news as to why Big Thunder will be closed, the short time frame suggests that the attraction will simply undergo minor maintenance and repair work. After all, it needs to be ready to handle the long busy summer ahead.

But the Frontierland roller coaster will not be the only attraction closed at this time. The Main Street, U.S.A. Station for the Walt Disney World Railroad will also continue to be closed for refurbishment.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad that takes you back in time to the days of America’s Gold Rush in the 1850s. Guests arrive at the Big Thunder Mining Company and board a runaway mine train that speeds through caves, and canyons. You’ll dodge cave-ins, explosives, sulfur-ridden hot springs, and speed through the ghost town of Tumbleweed, blaring its haunting high-pitched whistle. It has definitely earned the title “wildest ride in the wilderness.”

Big Thunder Mountain was first introduced at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, in 1979. It was added to Walt Disney World in 1980, and Tokyo Disneyland in 1987. But the most unique version of Big Thunder can be found at Disneyland Paris. The Walt Disney World version of the attraction continues to be a guest favorite and a proud member of the Magic Kingdom “Mountain Tri-Fecta” with Splash Mountain and Space Mountain.
