Absolutely loved River Country. We camped at Fort Wilderness on my first ever trip to Disney World in the summer of 1977! I also took my family there on a couple of different occasions, summers of 1991 and 1994! I was so sad when it closed!

I remember going there quite often as a kid until it finally did close. It was nice the last couple of years due to the smaller crowds. I do however remember swimming out to the rope fence that was protecting us from the outside water life.

    My first ever water park.
    It was very relaxing.
    My daughter enjoyed it too.
    Sad when it closed.

I think a major contributor to it shutting down is the fact that it used untreated river water in a lot of its attractions. Some number of people got sick from waterborne parasites as a result, resulting in lawsuits levied against Disney, and I think they just decided ‘treated water attractions only’ was the safer route, as there wasn’t any other way to ensure people wouldn’t continue to get sick.
