Hmmm. First Passenger Carrier? I guess I must have been hallucinating when the cruise ship I worked on in the 80’s/90’s Fantasy Cruise Line’s Britanis (part of Chandris Celebrity) went through the canal during their circumnavigations of South America sailing out of Miami. Not exactly accurate reporting but Nice for Disney to do it again though.

It’s the first passenger ship through the Panama Canal’s brand-new locks that are wider than the old ones and can accomodate larger, post-panamax ships. The new locks just opened this weekend.

According to the pilot on board, the new ship class is called “Neo Panamax.” And the issue wasn’t width, it was length due to the “duck tail” added in drydock last year.

I was so proud to be on this historic voyage. The fact that we were the first passenger ship though the new canal was only annoounced to us the day before. Unfortunately there was no “first passenger ship though the new canal” swag offered in the shops — just generic “Panama Canal 2017” items. However, every cabin got a special certificate and limited-edition print after the passage. Too Cool!
