Disney has always been at the front of theme park technology, from the MagicBand to the animatronics used in the Mine Train and Frozen Ever After. It will be very interesting to see how they’ll incpordte this tech, especially if it ends up being ready by the time Toy Story or Star Wars open.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it shows up in Star Wars, since they can put an animatronic character someplace near a walkway or attraction queue and then… hopefully… leave it to develop its own patter and interact with people as they walk past. I daresay they’re probably thinking ahead to add such things into Pandora (if they haven’t already). Free-roaming characters are harder, and will still need minders (since people can be jacka$$es and would probably try to break it periodically.)
