I think they’d likely adapt one of their Disney musicals from Broadway, either The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast. But with the live-action movie coming out next year, they’d probably wait on B&B. Lion King might also be a stretch since it’s still on Broadway, doing good business, so maybe they try something like Tarzan or The Little Mermaid. If they go the Disney Channel route, they could likely adapt High School Musical or Teen Beach Movie (Teen Beach Musical?) into something that would work with live TV.
For some reason, Mary Poppins comes to mind as something they would do. They already have the script, its a well loved movie, and they aren’t doing the live action movie for a bit. Unless they wanted to do Little Mermaid, or gosh even Newsies is an option. I don’t know if they would branch from beyond the musicals they’ve done into their movie musicals that haven’t yet been developed into stage musicals. One thing I would love to see is the Tangled Musical. If they could do that live, that would be amazing. I think there is a deep love for Tangled that the Disney audience has. The people who aren’t financially able to go on a cruise to see it would for sure tune in. It would also segue nicely into the Tangled series that Disney is producing. Those 2 could be cross-marketed and would generate a lot of buzz because of it. 🙂
I’m sure (sadly) Frozen will be the first one. But I would love to see the Disney Musicals that are no longer on Broadway (Newsies, Mary Poppins, Tarzan, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aida, soon to be Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame?).
OR maybe the shows (as some have mentioned) that are/where on the cruises and the parks (Toy Story, Tangled, Aladdin & Snow White).
ORR do something that hasn’t been done live on stage?! The possibilities are endless!
I think that they will do something surprising and not Frozen because it is going to be on its pre-broadway trial in the next 6 months so maybe Aladdin with the broadway cast would be nice
I would personally love to see a live telecast of “The Little Mermaid” because of what they could do with it. I would also love to see “Hunchback of Notre Dame” done live as well just for the adult audience.
Little Mermaid? Just….not the roller-shoes version, please.
Frozen is headed to Colorado for its out of town tryouts, and then off to Broadway. Tangled is an option but they need to add a lot more music. Hunchback did very well at Paper Mill Playhouse in Jersey, so it’s an option. I actually think it will be Newsies.
They wanted to do The Wiz, but it fell through and became Muppets Wizard of Oz. (And the upcoming live Beauty/Beast movie is reportedly the stage musical.)
Considering they already INVENTED the TV musical twenty years earlier with R&H’s Cinderella, Annie and The Music Man (and “Gepetto”, but let’s forget that), they’re more qualified than NBC or Fox is.
And since the reason we’re getting TV musicals now is that our buried national TV DNA misses 70’s network variety shows that -weren’t- idol competitions. As long as we keep reaching for those buried memories, TV isn’t lost yet.
