Every single time there’s a “surprise” hit, out come the web articles saying “What other obscure hero can they do next?”–It was Marvel’s turn after Guardians and Ant-Man, and now it’s Fox’s turn.
Fox and Disney weren’t doing it for their health: Guardians was supposed to plant the Thanos/Infiinity Stones backstory for Avengers 3, Ant-Man was supposed to get Henry Pym into the canon in time to invent Ultron (too late)…
And Fox? Their entire X-based canon spent SIX YEARS promising us they’d finally apologize to the fans for what they did to Reynolds’ Deadpool in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” (the Merc without a mouth??), and it just took them this long to finally get around to it.
So much as a Squirrel Girl movie might be fun…there’s no reason for it. And studios want good, solid reasons before they plunk down forty million.
